GK Goldline Help Me Please!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi i have a GK Goldline amp and cab and im having some trouble with it. My previous amp was a crappy combo that only had treble, bass and mid controls.

1. I'm a total noob so sorry if this is stupid but where should i set my gain knob, contour, and stuff like that? It seems like the gain controls the volume too.

2. I just can't seem to get a good tone. I can get an acceptable one but not good/great.

The basses i'm using are -
Music Man Stingray 2 Band eq
Fender Mike Dirnt Bass

Thanks for any help!

No kidding about the noob part. I will try to go easy on you.

I owned a Goldline rig for about a year. It was awesome, really great tone, but the 410 cabinet just didn't put the sound out to the audience enough for my liking, so I sold the head and cab and upgraded to bigger GK stuff.

The boost channel will make more of a difference if you give it more of the gain. If you don't have much gain going, you won't hear much of a growl coming out of channel B.

The contour boosts the lows and highs while dropping the mids. Boost this knob and you will get a more modern "thrashy" sound.

Did you try reading the manual? It gives a lot of tips to getting a good sound. Give the amp more gain until the preamp eventually clips with your loudest notes. This will get you the best signal to noise ratio. Start with the eq flat and the contour at 12:00. Adjust one control at a time...the GK eq is very flexible.

The key is to experiment. If you're listening to a song and saying "I want that tone!" you're probably out of luck unless you have a bunch of effects at your beckon. GK amps won't color the sound coming from your bass but will reproduce it flawlessly with punch and clarity, and if you so desire will add even order harmonic distortion with the boost. Good luck.

The sound isn't all in the head...it depends on the cab to a huge degree.

I had the Goldline 4x10 and it sounded great.

Don't just boost the bass up - start with everything set to the middle and controls like Contour OFF. Then try Contour on and off. See what it sounds like. Change one thing at a time and evaluate the result...then go to the next thing.

Chances are that you need more mid-boost, and not much on the low end boost.

I just bought one of these a couple of weeks ago and am running it thru the goldline 210 cab with a squire vm bass. Love the sound and power. What cab are you playing thru? While just playing at home I have my gain set at half and my master volume about 1 or 2 (trying not to piss off the neighborhood). As far as the eq is concerned I have it almost all in the middle as well as the contour at middle. Still messing with it. I have heard a lot of people badmouth these heads and cabs but I love mine. If you look for them used the cabs can be bought dirt cheap, got my 210 for $99. Good luck with it and let me know if you find something that sounds great.

Remember that the Contour is OFF when it is turned all the way counter-clockwise. I suggest starting with it liek this and adjusting from there. Also keep in mind that what sounds great in your living room probably won't sit well in a mix.

Don't go crazy with the bass boost and don't cut out too much of your mids.
