GK Head Arrived today - Box Damaged - What would you do?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok guys--

Question for you... What would you do in this scenario...

I got a used GK 1001 RB ii off evilbay this week...in the pics it looked very clean. Which is why I got it.
I didnt pay for a roughed up, dinged up head... I paid for a head in nice clean shape.

So It arrived yesterday... shipping box ripped open on one side....
and it looks like one corner of the amp took a ding/dent from a hit.. (not a BIG dent) but something definately happened...

so I plugged it in... and it seems to work fine....
however, now I am paranoid / worried there will be an issue down the road with it because of the rough handling that has happened to it.. What would you guys do? Would you want a refund? or have the seller claim it through Fedex and get your money back? Or want a partial refund from the seller for poor packaging? I blame fedex for bad shipping, but I also blame the seller for a paper thin box it was put in.. It had bubble wrap, which is about the only thing that saved it... cuz the box is demolished.

It freakin gets me worked up when Fedex and UPS handle stuff rough, and that the shippers in both cases here have packaged things so poorly, it's a no win situation lately for me. I swear to God I have had the worst luck this month... I had a Peavey Head shipped to me via UPS 2 weeks ago via a store in Upper Mass. and it was totally trashed, the inside had **** floating around in it, and the rack ears were bent.... needless to say I sent that sucker back and it never saw my cabinets... and It was a piss poor packing job for a store... and I let the guy know when I called them about it.

Needless to say-----I am ready to take up Stamp Collecting instead of music

Anyhow - Your opinions/thoughts are appreciated

I would have the seller/shipper file a claim with FedEx. Have it checked out by a qualified amp tech and have them go through it completely. Then submit that amount plus any additional parts/labor cost to FedEx. Take lots of pics of the packaging and make sure the shipper insured it for at least the amount to cover repair/replacement before filing a claim. BTW this is the worst time of year to buy something and have it shipped! If it were me I would have waited until after Christmas to have the seller ship it to me. Higher volume of packages means greater chance of it getting damaged.

First of all.......did you sign for the box? If so, did you have the driver note damage to the box?

If not........good luck!

My opinion if it works fine now it should probably work fine. Although I do agree it absolutley sucks when stuff like that happens

1st question..was it insured?

If the answer to question 1 is no..then enjoy the amp... if yes then you should be ok as you have some protection through ups/fedex and via ebay and paypal policies...more ebay as paypal only covers if it gets shipped or not...after that its on you..

You have to file i think within 24-48 hrs to ups/fedex..if its beyond that then its on the seller to help you out... otherwise enjoy the amp..screw the paranoia.

I like the screw the paranoia idea.... I would think its ok, if it works now, right? If anything, it kinda shows its a tough amp! hahaha.... I am gonna see what the seller has to say or what ideas he has to offer though... it's just a big bummer... and doesnt make me feel good about things.

I know how you feel man... :/ I had just ordered a 6 string Ibanez SR that arrived with a broken neck due to UPS. I bought it from Guitar Center so I know it was legit when it left... But I was sad too, but Im sure everything will turn for the better! Happy Xmas

It's the risk we take buying anything used over the internet (even new things for that matter). Sorry, but if you're gonna live in paranoia, then it's time to stop mail ordering things and buy locally.

If you want your money back take pictures of the box and the head and email the seller.

i've been buying and selling over the internet WAY before eBay was around...and actually WAY before the internet was around.. (you know, the good old BBS days)...i'm not living in paranoia, just was asking for some opinions on what others would do.

Send it back and get your money back. A year from now when it craps out on you, you'll wonder if it was because of this damage.

It will be denied, based on improper packing. If the packing is sub-standard there is no insurance.
The OP should have refused delivery, based on the condition of the box. FedEx would have then returned the package to the shipper, at the shipper's expense, while the OP would cancel payment. But once the OP accepted delivery the horse was out of the barn, so it's too late to close the door now.

Yep. This is why I've never been able to sell my Rickenbacker or any of my other gear - I refuse to let a shipping company destroy it (buyer has to come pick up personally or no deal).

Rule #1 is, if it arrives with any visible shipping damage, you have to refuse it. That kicks it back to the seller and the shipping company to straighten out.

UPS in particular is able to destroy even well packed and protected stuff but FedEx is pretty good at it too.

As for what to do now, you're kind of screwed because the box was already accepted. You might try calling UPS and see what your options are, but they're pretty limited at this point.

Also, don't ship anything unless you absolutely have to. I.e. I'm screwed on my basses because I only ever use Carvins now. So no choice there (fortunately those come in cases). And if you have to send something back to the factory, you just have to do it.

Double box everything with lots and lots of packing material when you do ship, buy insurance up to the replacement value, etc.

As usual Bill makes complete sense.

If none of the controls are damaged it might be possible to straighten out and dings that exist. If the front panel is badly bent you might be able to get a replacement from GK. Why not post a photo and let us see what the damage is.

Ok I sell on ebay, one you complain to paypal that something is wrong the money is freezed up in the person account who sold it to you. So don't worry you can get your money back on anything. Just file a paypal complaint so the seller can reply on what he wants to do.
Just remember if it was a deal, you might not find it for that cheap again. Even you can ask for a discount on the damaged item as well thru paypal.
