GK head breaking up

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a GK 1001RB 2X10 combo which I have owned for years. It has started to break up when you play, If you play single notes it sounds very staticky, the static is only heard with the note. I have unplugged the speakon and plugged it into another GK 1001RBII head and the cab is fine, plug the combo head back in and the static is there. What could be causing this. HELP!

I'm wondering if one (or both) of the speakers might be blown. That's a lot of amp for two 10" speakers. What kind of volume do you usually play at? Do you really crank it up?

You might want to take the grill off and check the speakers for tears.

Run a 1/4" instrument cable from the effects send back into the effects return and see what happens.

I just went through this with my 400RB-IV. Patch cord in the effects loop didn't help. I took the amp apart and pulled the board out containing the tone controls. I picked up so good pot cleaner/lubricant and gave all the pots a good cleaning. I also sprayed the connectors for the input and effects return. Let it dry for a day, put back together and it works like a charm. Just take your time, make sure you re-assemble correctly and you're good to go. Or you can take it to a amp tech to have him clean it if you would rather.

I have tried bypassing the efx loop and nothing changes. if I plug directly into the return the problem still exist. speakers are tight and problem does not exist with another 1001RBII head plugged into cab. I basically use this amp at home for practice, I have other cabs that I use for playing the louder stuff so this amp has not really been abused.I may just try Cableguy's recommendation and see how that pans out. Really wanted to see if anyone else had this same problem....

I just love GK's customer support! I sent them an email yesterday and they got back to me already!!! This is why I have been a loyal GK user besides liking the way they sound. I described my problem to the tech and he seems to think it's a thermal problem with heat. I do notice the fan was coming on right away as it was not doing that before. He also mentioned the temperature sensor could be failing and told me if I send it to him they would take a look at it and fix it!
