GK MB115 Question

Sign in to disble this ad
People say these 200 watt amps are good enough for small to mid sized gigs. I played one today with an active SR 505. Nice tone for sure!

Here is my problem. I used to have a 120 watt ish GBX 4X10 half stack back on the 80's. I never turned my volume past 2 or the cops would be there because of noise complaints from a block away (No exaggeration). This GK being rated at 200 watts, I blasted it at over 3/4 of the master and gain and it never got any where near as loud as my old clunker GBX!!! I was very dissapointed!!

Is this because there is only 1 15" speaker pushing air, or are they rating the amps different these days. OOOOR!!! Was I just playing too damned loud back then?

It just seemed that these 200 watt amps actually pushed maybe 100 to what my ears detected. Don't get me wrong they still seem like excellent amps, but I just expected more out of 200 watts

Maybe it's the sensitivity of the speakers, or just a different sound in a store? Anyway, I've played many a gig with a 115 combo and did well. Depends on stage volume, of course, with different bands. I even did an outdoor gig recently with a Peavey TNT 200w combo that was already onstage. It wasn't quite enough for that, but not too bad. My old Trace Elliot GP7SM 200 was always enough with bands that weren't too loud in medium-sized venues. Also, my Peavey Combo 300 (200w with one 15" at 4 ohms) did a good job. I think your 410 sounded full because of all the speakers and probably the size of the box.

I'm sure no expert, though, but I have often been let down when playing something in a large music store. Sounds much different at home, and even more different at a gig.

I use my MB115 for bar gigs no problem. Guitar, bass, drums and harp player.
