GK MB200 for a vintage tone?

Sign in to disble this ad

Well, here's the situation. I've come to a point in my "career" as a bass player that I will now actually be performing more often, mainly at my high school.
My 60 watt VOX t60 combo just hasn't been cutting it lately- You can hardly hear it when playing live, and the sound gets distorted at the higher volumes.

I've been looking around at the local guitar center (only place with a selection of bass amps around), and I noticed the GK MB200. It's a tiny little thing at 2lbs, but I haven't been able to try it yet.

Would I be able to get a nice VOX-like tone out of this thing? I mainly play older 60's and 70's rock (Beatles(!!!), Beach Boys, Wings, bands of that nature).

I use a Hofner 500/1CT if that helps any.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

This is also what I'd be getting for a cab:

I don't think there would be a huge clean volume difference. GK has their own unique sound, but there are a lot of sweet tones it can produce

I do not know about the vintage tone in particular, but instead of buying that head/cab combo, you should spend just a little more and get this http://www.guitarcenter.com/Gallien-...53-i1474943.gc

The Beatles will never have sounded so good.
Also, you will never have to worry about not being heard again if your current amp that you describe is barely cutting it. If you're really set on getting a vintage tone, you should definitely play whatever you are looking at BEFORE you buy. I have never heard any GK's being called vintage sounding before, unless you are talking about the GK 800rb which defined it's own unique popular tone roughly 30 years ago.

I'll try to stop by and mess with the one they have there to see what I can get out of it.

Thanks!
