Hey guys, just figured I'd give some feedback on my use of the Gallien Krueger MB210, 500w combo with a 4x10 extension cabinet, thus resulting in a 6x10 rig. There had been talk by some of the guys on here wondering if the combo could handle an additional four tens - fortunately, I was able to try this setup at a bar last night in a live situation. My band plays mostly 90s alternative covers with several originals mixed in. I have to stand up to two loud guitarists, both with Marshall stacks. The venue was a 300ish person bar with a stage about two feet above ground level. This was also the first time I hooked the combo up to a 4x10.
And oh my God. It rocked.
The combo has absolutely no trouble pushing all six drivers. I couldn't turn the volume up past 1/3 without drowning out the band and shaking empty beer bottles off the tables. I had to keep it low - the additional four tens literally double the volume of the MB210. Also, I was very surprised at how dramatically it changed the sound of the MB210, for the better! Those of you that own the combo know that it sounds awesome, it has great growly mids and very articulate tone - but does have a repuation for having slightly "boomy" lows at higher volumes. The additional 4x10 cab completely eliminated any boominess and allowed for the best low end clarity I have heard from a local band's bass rig in years. You could truly "feel" the low frequencies without any harshness. The tone was very smooth and clean. Each note was incredibly clear and identifiable. I really couldn't believe how "deep" it sounded. It was absolutely awesome.
I got more compliments on my bass tone last night than at any gig I've ever played, and I have played hundreds of shows. People were blown away by how good it sounded. If any of you have had second thoughts about making a 6x10 rig with the MB210, abandon your doubts! This setup is the best sounding rig I have ever used.
It wasn't a short show either, we played for a little over 3 hours, and I really put the GK to the test - it handled it like a champ. The cabinet I was using, which I borrowed from my guitarist, was an old Seismic Audio 4x10, 800w @ 8 ohms. I use passive basses and my EQ on the amp was as follows:
Gain: 12:00
Treble: 12:00
High Mid: 2:00
Low Mid: 2:00
Bass: 10:00
Boost: 12:00
I highly recommend this setup to any of you who are looking for a portable, deep, loud, and affordable 6x10 rig. Immediately after the gig was done, I bought the cabinet from my guitarist. This setup will be my main gigging rig from here on out. It sounded THAT good.
