GK MB210 Humming Problem

Sign in to disble this ad
About a year ago I bought my first "decent" combo bass amp, the GK MB210. Yesterday though I noticed a very annoying hum when I turn on the amp (with no bass guitar). The gain is set at 9:00, boost at 10:00, and the master at around 3:00. EQ is set at almost flat. Do combo amps usually have this kind of hum, or did I do just break my amp?

I also tried connecting the direct out of the MB210 (with no instrument and with instrument) to a recording interface (M-audio Fast Track via Presonus Tube Pre), and both cases have the hum after recording a few bars.

For some reason I did not notice this hum until just yesterday. The only new thing I could think of is that I moved in to a new house just about two weeks ago, but that doesn't explain why I didn't notice it for the past two weeks. This week I have a band practice at my friend's place, and then I'll see if the hum is still there.

Any ideas on how to remove the hum, and is it just really part of the amp? I really want to record the bass through the MB210's direct out, but now the humming is just too much. Thanks in advance!

Other issue: Sometimes my bass guitar adds more hum, but I think that's my instrument's problem. It's an Ibanez SR706 (2008) with Aguilar OBP-3 and Bartolini MK6 pups. The pots are all exposed (no knobs), and when I touch the pots with my hands, the humming lessens down to only the amp's humming. However, the guitar's humming disappears when I transferred my amp to another room of the same house. I'm hoping to get this amp hum gone, and then tackling the guitar problem next.

Is the unit properly grounded?
Don't have one myself, but my GK MB150 (old school) is dead quiet wich an amp should be when an instrument is not plugged in.
Check your electricity first, who knows... New place might be the reason!

How do you know if the amp is properly grounded?

Wouldn't recommend testing it yourself; get a pro (or someone you know) to take a look at it. Meanwhile, I'd get an extension cord & get the power from the room that doesn't seem to have the issue.
