So, I blew a speaker in my combo. I bought the combo off of ebay, so I don't have a warranty. This is the 2nd GK item I've owned, and both of them have failed me. (the other was a 700 rb that started on fire.)
I looked up where my local repair shop is, and it's probably gonna cost $140 plus labor to get it fixed. My question is, should I try to find different drivers to install? I don't want to put GK drivers back in just to blow again. I bought this before the portaflex was out, I am an ampeg guy. I will be playing my P5 through a VT pedal into this combo. Any speaker suggestions that would work with this cabinet? Or should I give GK another try, and just have it fixed with GK parts?

Or this one: GK Store: Paragon 10", 100W, 16 Ohm, 60Hz, Bass Driver
No post 1950's amp will "catch fire" unless someone did some modifications in the attempt to sell it off and hope it lasts long enough to get the money in hand.
Unless the MB210 was a used unit you may still have a warranty. Contact brian@gallien.com
Just putting any aftermarket speaker in there is a poor idea. G-K makes their own speakers so a aftermarket match will be difficult. Sounds like your troubles have been due to flea-bay, not G-K?

While you have it apart, search up the threads about bracing and lining them too, do that while it's apart and turn it into a good cab. You don't have a warranty so it's no big deal to make some improvements. |

But I realize they've been around for awhile for good reason. The amp that caught on fire I bought from Sam Ash as new, but they said there was a d/c plug mis-wire, and gave me full trade value. (back in 2002)
The amp seemed fine when I got it from e-bay. I then sold it and shipped it to florida, and the TB'er who got it said it was broken. I took the amp back with full refund, but now I have the problem.
I will contact Brian anyway, just to see if they can help at all. Thanks again for the info.

As will33 suggested, it still wouldn’t be a bad idea to add some cross bracing.
I’ve got a 212MBE that’s a rattle trap from being pushed, and now I HAVE to add some.
Funny, I kinda forgot I had it until I just mentioned it in another thread, haha.

May be better to stick with the GK driver if you have to. Then add an extension if you need to to get louder so you're not pushing these so hard.
Ya, if there was a shipping mishandling thing, that could very well be the source of the problem. Put it back to original condition, wait on the ext. until you see if you need it. The bracing and linong thing is still a good thing to do though seeing as you'll have it apart already anyway. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
