Anyone know if the "Return" FX input can be used as an input for an MP3 player?

You could do so but you'll have to watch the output of the MP3 player isn't too hot. You will also have to mix the left and right channels from the player. If you use a cable that shorts them it could cause damage to the player.

Using the return may well disconnect the amps pre-amp leaving you with just the player coming through.

Plug into the effect send, so it won't disconnect the preamp. The send and return are hard wired together. The effect return has a switch that disconnects the preamp. This is how my GK BL600 was wired.

Plugging a device that's putting out a signal, into a jack that's for all inteded purposes an OUTput, will not do any good.
