Anyone know where there's a GK repair center that's NOT Fat Willy or National Speaker?

Thanks

The power transformer is shot. It's happened before. Distorts the signal really badly. I know it's not the cab because I have another amp that powers the cab just fine.

What model? Try a cable looped from the effects send to effects return first (the contacts in the effects return jack could be dodgy). Power trans. does not sound like the trouble (and could be why you need a new shop?).
Tranformer failures in G-Ks are pretty rare.

I have a compressor in the effects loop but when I unplug it it's still distorting. I tried different cables, different basses... everything I could think of.

I know it's rare to blow a transformer but I'm pretty sure that's what's happened. But I'm no electrician so I could be wrong. I HOPE I'm wrong that cost me $300 to get fixed last time.

Try plugging your bass direct into the effects return (it won't be as loud) if the sound is not distorted then the power trans is OK and the trouble lays in the pre amp. Some models have some little ceramic caps in the preamp that would go bad and cause your described problem. Either way you will need a good shop, op amps have been known to fail also, though rare in any SS amp (they are not expensive either).

Ah I see you have the 1001RB (not the series II), they did have the cap trouble IIRC.

So this is strange.

I turned the amp back on to try your suggestion. It went "Shhhhhhhh... Ffffweeeeee... Thump".

And now it works like nothing ever happened.

What was that?

Hahahaha thats too funny. Sorry.....could be the effects return connection, PC board interconnect cables or a cold solder joint somewhere. Guess you at least know now it is not a $300 transformer!

HAHA I guess you're right that is pretty funny. Well... hmmm... not sure what to do now. Don't want to pay someone to look for something that maybe, could be, sorta wrong.

Thanks for all your help B-String.

No problem. Time for a good professional cleaning maybe? Pots, jacks, interconnects and inspect for cold solder joints could save you some frustration in the future. Or you maybe just fine for some time to come. Little factoid, cables or mechanical connections left undisturbed in low level "circuits" will develop "fretting" which is a non-conductive layer (easily removed with proper cleaning).
Enjoy your weekend!
