GK speakon cable question

Sign in to disble this ad
First I'd like to say thanks to the informative topics which helped me decide on my new light weight bass rig!

I got a GK MB500 and a Markbass 102HF cab, I'm very happy with this setup as it's versatile, very very portable, and light!

Anyway the store gave me a GK speakon cable, is it ok to use this cable with the 102HF cab? after digging around here I found that GK speakons are for bi-amping, but obviously this isn't the case with the Markbass cab, but is it ok to still just use the cable anyway?

Cheers.

No problem. I use one -- it's the only GK kit I have.

I think the issue could be using the GK amp, I read somewhere that the amp can fry cos the cable is trying to bi-amp but the cab doesn't accommodate. It's something to do with the amount of wires inside the speakon cable, I think the GK cable has 4 wires, while most have only 2 (like any speaker cable).

Does this make sense at all?

Yep. +1,-1 for woofer. +2,-2 for tweeter.

DJ Bebop could you elaborate a little?

So I am right being hesitant in using the GK cable with the Markbass cab, and should just use a normal speakon cable for this connection?

It will work fine. It is a 4 conductor speakon with connections -1 and +1 going to full range and -2, +2 are used for the tweeter. +2,-2 will be connected at the amp but not at the cab so it will work in full range only.

The MB500 doesn't have a separate tweeter amp, so the +2, -2 would not be connected at the amp either.
