GK100RB + SKB Shallow Case + Speakon Cables =???

Sign in to disble this ad
I think I need to protect my new GK1001RB with a snazzy case. I don't want stage divers knocking it off or drunks dumping beer on it. From searching here, folks seem to like the SKB's over the Gators. But from the reviews I've read, the SKB's have kind of a cheesy back, which makes it difficult to patch cables through.

Does anyone use a GK1001RB (or a 700RB) with a 2 space SKB case AND use Speakon Connections? Would the 3 space be better? I really don't see me ever using the third space. In 20 years this is the first time I've even needed a rack case.

Right now, I'm kind of leaning towards Gator, just because of the easier opening backs. Too bad SKB can't do the same.

Opinions?

I could be wrong here, but I think the 1001RB requires a 3-space rack, because of the top-mounted fan.

It's not terribly snazzy, but I've got my 1001RB in an old Mesa 2-space semi-soft rack, the kind that had two panels of mesh webbing on the top and on both sides. Not sure what Mesa amp it was designed for, but the front top webbing sits right over the RB's fan. Vents perfectly. There's plenty of room in the back to access the the speakons. Plus, the zip pouch bag in the back cover holds the speaker cable, the power cord and an extension cord. Mesa should really make them again.

Here's a picture of the one I had a couple years ago . Seemed like enough room above it in the 2 space rack for cooling and I could get to the speakons fine . A very good fit and that back panel was fine too .

My 700rb-II has done just fine in this SKB 2U ATA rack case:

On this style of SKB, the front and rear lids are the same, btw...

The problems with Gator cases are that they're made of a thinner plastic than SKB cases, and Gators have the latches on the rack instead of the lid, like SKB does - this makes them prone to rattling for bass amp applications...

The SKB ATA case I showed has no problems with any cabling, including Speakons...

Get a 3 space rack as the head vents on top. I bought the one that has a normal back as well, not that cheaper one. I think it is worth it. I do unhook my speakons and put them in that empty space when packed up though.

I have my 1001RB-II in a 4-space SKB(the deep molded roto x kind) and its awesome. I have it mounted in the bottom two spaces with a two-space vent panel on top. Never has any problems keeping cool, and I can leave the power and speakon cables conected in the back. They go for around $110 IIRC.
