GK800RB Vs. GK MB500?

Sign in to disble this ad
In terms of tone, not considering portability, does the GK MB500 can compete with the classic GK800RB? Does the MB500 have that GK800rb punch-tone who made it a classic?

Punch yes, but the MB500 goes deeper than the 800RB. It could be adjusted to sound very close.

You won't get that classic GK Growl with the MB500 however.

You can try, wit the boost channel. I have an MB500 and if you crank the boost and play loud you can get some of that. If not, SansAmp (or similar).

after reading your comments it is tone wise similar and less expensive. So it means it is an upgrade of the 800RB?

+1...

I have both heads.
The 500 can get close to the sound of the 800 but is capable of going deeper, higher, and MUCH, MUCH louder. Plus, the 500's D.I. is quieter.
Portability aside, I'm gigging the MB-500 full time now because of it's fuller features.
My 800 has been pretty much regulated to the pratice spot or our keyboard player uses it when his amp is on the fritz...

So can the MB500 recreate that rolling GK growl like the 800 to your ears? Thanks.

I have never used an 800RB, but I have a 400RBIII, and I honestly think my MB500 sounds better. With the boost channel, it growls. It goes lower, louder, is less noisy, lighter, and takes up less space. It has been my #1 for months. It has made me not want to change anything for a while, actually.
The growl really came out of my amps when I got the right cabs though.

What cabs are you using? I am going to buy that head this week. After much research and flip flopping, I'm pulling the trigger. I plan on purchasing the 212 8 ohm cab.

Darn! I was just going to suggest waiting for the GK MB800. Even though it wasn't mentioned either.
