Glockenklang SoulII vs Phantom Power

Sign in to disble this ad
Just a quick question about Phantom Power. I use my Glockenklang as preamp and plug it into a mixer via DI out. On this one however I need phantom power enabled for another device which is powered this way. Does my amp care about the phantom power on its DI out?

DI & Phantom power

Could you please clarify? I would think that your mixer would be able to select phantom power on each input separately. It sounds like you're saying that the Glock DI is being connected to one input on your mixer, but you have a phantom powered mic that is plugging into a second input on the mixer and you are going to enable phantom power on all inputs. Is this what you're saying? If not, then what?

Regarding your specific question: Is there any adverse affect to the Glock if you connect the DI output to a piece of equipment that provides phantom power? I recommend you contact Udo at info@glockenklang.de

This is in itself an interesting question, because it is easy enough for the sound guy to activate phantom power on the wrong channel. It would be good to know if this will fry the Glock DI output circuitry...

You got the specific question right. I worry about me forgetting the phantom power and frying some equipment that probably can't handle it.

Any amp using a transformer in its DI circuit will be safe with phantom power engaged. OP I would email Glock and ask them for a ruling. I would think that any designer would consider phantom power and design for it.

JS Barber many many mixers in the range that the average musician can afford will have global phantom power switches. Both of mine certainly do.

Just got a reply from the Glockenklang guys. The DI out is protected. No worries needed about phantom power.

DI Protection

That is good to know (about protection on DI output). I do seem to recall being cautioned by Helge (Udo's son) regarding going from the XLR output on the Glock to a 1/4" input on the mixer(/poweramp). If you wire it incorrectly you can damage the unit. But, I don't recall if this was for the DI Out or the Line Out. (This was in the context of my BAC Preamp)

Phantom Power Protection

I emailed Glockenklang regarding this to clarify the situation wrt my amplifiers (BAC) and was told by Udo that: The BAC, Soul II, and Heart-Rock amps are definitely safe against phantom power. Older amps are not always safe.

So, if anyone has one of the ones listed above by Udo then there is protection, but this doesn't apply to all amps they have ever produced. So if you have one of the older amps you could potentially be at risk...

It seems that my concern was not unrealistic then. Good to know that this might be a problem with some gear. It's rtm time then..
