Goliath Jr II speaker replacement

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an GII Jr. 2x10, all original. The stock 250 watt handling capacity is kind of meager by today's standards of bass amp output margins.

The speakers in mine are fine and they sounds great....that is until I push my amp's volume to about 4-5, they start to break up.

I'm running an SVT 2-Pro through this as well as a Goliath II 4x10 (in which I changed the speakers out to Eminence Legend BP102-4's, and I'm extremely happy with how it sounds and the low end it has). The 4x10 now has an 800 watt rating thanks to 200w per speaker. So I'm putting less than 150 tube watts through this (at volume of 5) and they're farting out on the low notes...not too good.

Since I'm happy with the 4x10, I was thinking about going with those same speakers in the 2x10...I asked Eminence their opinion on that, and they agreed it would be a good idea. That way both cabs match up more or less, and these speakers can really take a beating (6.2mm X-max!!!)

However, since this is a 4-ohm cab, I'd rather have more capacity since my BX 500 puts out 500 at 4-ohms. If I can get 500-600 watt capacity, it would be ideal. I may want to use this cab and the BX alone at some point

So I kind of narrowed my choices down to only a few speakers, like the Avatar design Deltalite's or the Carvin Neo speakers (I forget who makes them)

Anyone change your GII Jr speakers to something with higher capacity with good results?

(I know...WINsd...)

I did this to a Goli jnr lll. The PAS speakers went down and I replaced them with Eminence Delta 2510 and this works fine. Lighter Neo's, more power ( 500w ) and no discernable difference in tone, IFAICR

The only problem is that I need to match up the porting to the speakers now.. I haven't done this but I need to get round to this to get the best out of the cab

Because the cab was not designed for the 2510s, so it needs some rework to accommodate them.

To the OP:
If you change speakers, plan to rework the cabinet. If you don't, you might be wasting money on the speakers.

And you're really expecting too much from a 210.

With enough bass EQ and volume, you can cause any cab to fart out.

Then again, they're happy to take your money. Reworking the cabinet design is not their problem.
