Good amp for pits

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys. Lately Ive been doing a lot of pits for musicals. I only have one rig. Its a 600w head and a 4x10 cab. Anyone whos ever played in a pit knows that this is not only over powered, but WAY TO BIG. For the 3 pits I did before I made it work, but now Im doing one or two of these pit shows a month, and I really need a smaller amp. Im taking up the room of 3 people with my current rig, and no one likes that. If I wasnt a solid player, I def would have been cut for it already on the pits Im doing.

So heres whats up. I need something in the 100w-ish range that is very small. Not much more than 2 feet in any direction. Tone is not a huge factor because Im DI'd anyways. The amp is more or less my monitor and all the sound in the house is PA.

Im in the $300ish price range

Any recommendations? I hear GK makes a really small 150w, but its more than double my price range

PS. I have no preference for speaker config since the sound isnt really going to be in the house

One those Carvin Micro Combos looks like it is in your price range. They are quite new, so no direct experience here. There's a thread around here somewhere on them.

I now use my Acoustic Image Clarus head and Raezer's Edge 1x10 cab for theater pits, but for years I used a Hartke Kickback 12 which worked well in those situations and can be had in your price range.

I used an SWR WM10 for pit work and it was great. I was told to turn down during JC Superstar. Here's one on eBay for $110 + $30 shipping:

i think those new gk's look like incredible deals ... it's way out of your price range, but maybe used, a markbass minimark would be banging! (maybe even a micro mark) I gig w/ mine quite a bit and it's one solid amp!

There is nothing wrong with using your head with a small 1x12" cabinet either. For theatre work I usually use my GK MB150S. They are fairly common on the used market.

My school actually has one of these, so Im quite familiar and comfortable with it. Obviously, new is far out of my price range. Whats a fair price for a used one?
