A good DIY Cab For An 18" Spkr??

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys, I've acquired a PV 1808-8 SPS BWX driver. I am able to build fairly complex cabs. Does fEarful go that large? Also, I might be interested in some kind of floor monitor. Loud is good, low is better. I'm just looking for some kinda off the wall project, I've got plenty of conventional speakers...Thanks...Cheers...

Get an 8" speaker from a PV Rage 158 and crossover @ 300 Hz. Cheap, heavy nEarful. Cheers!

Fearfuls are pretty specific to the Kappalite drivers. Get thee to WinISD and work out a box. Or make a Acoustic 360 cab clone.

A woofer and a midrange do not a Fearful make. The fearful is a cabinet designed around specific drivers. If you change the drivers the box will not work properly.

The parameters on the Peavey woofer say "sealed box" to me, maybe 6 cubic feet or so... but if you really want to go low, and can live with a big box, then 12 cubic feet tuned to 31 Hz will give you a monster bottom end. Use four 4" diameter ports, each 6" long. Excursion-limited power handling will be modest, but you may not need a lot of power.

Note that the 15" woofer in the fEarful will actually move more air because it has more than twice the excursion of the Peavey. And it weighs half as much. And costs about the same. And you can get away with a much smaller box size. That's why Greenboy chose the Kappalite 3015LF... it is at the edge of the envelope in low-bass performance/weight/price.
