Good match for an Ampeg svt3 pro

Sign in to disble this ad
I just picked up an Ampeg svt3 pro. I was saving to get an Ampeg portaflex pf500 with the 15 cab but I had a chance to get the svg3 pro at a good price and bought it. Now is it a good fit for what I play? I play 50s and 60s oldies rock n roll. If so, what is a good cab to match with it. If not, I'll just sell it. Thanks.

I have had most of the Ampeg heads, just sold my 4pro and it seems to me that the 3pro should match up with the Ampeg 410HLF. For me Ampegs cabs are really flexible with most heads. Right now, I am running my SVT CL head into (2) 210AV cabs (practice rig) . Take your head to a big music store (Guitar C. ) and see what sounds best......

For the music you're playing a stack of 2 1X15s. (I'm pretty biased here....)

2 15's would be awesome, or a 410hlf, sure. Even a good 2x12 will do nicely. Just don't fall for a single driver cab.

I like the sound of two 15. Any cabs in particular? Ampeg?

This is where the search begins. If you like the idea of 2 15s you'll have to check out local music stores and just play through them. I used to have a SWR SM 400 with a pair of (!) Peavey 1X15s and the head went in for repairs. I got a loaner SVT3 pro and the sound was... like the hammer of Thor !

I'm not saying run out and get Peavey but be ready to look on CL & E bay and used in your local music stores etc.

I've had good luck with Carvin but they don't make a 2X15 cab.

BTW I was thinking an Ampeg PF 500 and two PF 1X15s if I was gonna switch. [also, I use 2 1X15 cabs because they are easier to move and if the gig is small I only need to bring one.]

Mesa's old deisel series can be had for relatively cheap, and are awesome cabs. Heavy, but great sounding. Should be able to find a Deisel 215 for under $400.

I can get a pretty nice slightly distorted retro sound with my 3Pro. Be sure to crank up that gain knob, the "peak" light means you're getting into the sweet zone.

You might do best with 2 1x15 cabs (8 ohms each) instead of a 2x15. You may find you need only one of them for smaller venues, or if you have good PA support. But stack the two of them and you should have no trouble filling a big room!

Any cabs that do a total of 4 ohms or greater will work...which means any one 4 ohm cab or one or two 8 ohm cabs. I suggest using matching cabs if you get two...Ampeg makes a lot of great cabs that'll work. But pretty much any cabs will work.

I've used a pair of 3-Pros and can dial in a nice "oldies" tone through a 2x15 SVT/LGS cab. They also sound real nice through my PF115 Portaflex cab, but they measure a little deeper than the cab, and might over hang a bit.
