Good matched????

I've been hearing alot of "this amp matches perfectly with this cabinet" and I'm pretty clueless regarding this...

Is it a configuration thing or a brand thing?

What amps match well to these cabs?

Also, is it optimal to run an amp at 8 ohms or 4 ohms?

It's a taste thing. Amplifiers and cabinets have particular "voicings" (which may include "flat") that may complement one another in a pleasing way or not, and/or may require EQ adjustments to compensate.

It would make sense if one brand's amplifiers and cabinets "matched" well, and no doubt they do for many higher-end brands, but I always assume marketing departments trump engineering departments until proven otherwise, and any "matching" is done at the visual rather than the aural level.
