Hey i'm in a sludge stoner band and a punk band and want to update from my behringer 100 watt amp. It sounds like crap and can't get loud at all. I want to be able to here my self playing with other guys in a room and we are going to start gigging. What are some amps and heads that are nicely priced. I'd like to pay under a grand for both. The cheaper the better, but i don't want a pos like my behringer that i embarassingly have. Any recommendations? |

Shoot for at least a GK 700rb-II.
They're fairly venerable around here and get the job done in nearly ANY situation. |

As far as amps go I would look out for old Sunn or Acoustic solidstate heads or a tube head. Whatever really.. Ampeg, Marshall, Sound City, Simmwatts, Fender Bassman, Peavey... I wouldn't recommend anything less then 100 tube watts. When it comes to cabs see if you can find some of the 80's Peavey stuff or some Bag End's. Yeah, and Ampegs, or even SWR. The bigger the better.
Some of this stuff doesn't go all that cheap anymore, but you might get lucky.
Oh.... There is this guy on here called Mr. Foxen who scored a deal on a ****load of old Sound City amps. I think one of those can be had for a reasonable price, but I think it would involve some repairs or service.

MM | I didn't even see the title right. I read it as Amps and cabs. I need to be more observant I guess.
But yes I recommend looking used. You can get a lot of decent amp for a good price. I got my Eden half stack for under $1000 and am quite happy with it. |

The speaker cab(s) will be your limiting factor in terms of volume. Old used Peavey 2x15 cabs loaded with Black Widows are among the best for loud and cheap. Sometimes Ampeg 8x10 810E cabs can be found locally for < $500 depending on location.
Search your local used market for amps. minimum 500 watts for solid state or hybrid head, minimum 200 watts for a tube head.
Just about any working amp would be an improvement over Behringer. blecccchhh

You'll have a TON of effects, different heads, different cabs, an eq, compression(if you use it), a tuner, etc... Run effects through a power amp, into a cab. I have an actual head, a GK 1001RB-II. So, I use it. A cab with a tweeter will allow a wider range of tonal varieties. I use an SWR Workinman's Tower 8x10. My rig sounds phoenominal, rattles the bones.

Paid $900 for everything you see in the pic. Cab cost $400.00, Head was $300, and bass was $200.
Patience is your friend.

You can find good local deals on big speaker cabs, because nobody wants to ship them.
