good replacment driver

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a GK BLX 4x10 cab and..........it sucks. As I'm on a very small budget i was thinking it might be cheaper to replace the drivers than it would be to replace the whole cab. I'm not looking for the cheapest speakers, I want quality, just quality at a good price. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thank you.

Basslite's are a great replacement but even so, it's $300 for new speakers. For that you could go on the used market and flip several different 410's until you find something you like. You could keep pretty even money give or take
$50-$100 and still get these if you don't like what you've come across. Yes, it depends on volume/port tuning etc. but most 410's are close to the same size inside and tuning is either similair or can be easily changed.

The low end response. Very muddy and undefined. I added a 1x15 cab and that helped a little, but still my tone sucks. I mean it gets the job done but still not the sound i'm looking for. I guess it just may be the never ending search for the perfect tone.

Most used speaker will be cheaper than replacing 4 speakers. Maybe try avatar.

the backline cabs aren't great. gk's more expensive cabs are good but the backlines aren't. you can find used 410's all over the place that are better for a lot cheaper. and replacing speakers may work but in the long run it'll be more expensive.

300$ for 4 eminence Basslite's,
that is simply unfair
that's almost the amount i will pay for ordering one.
i would swap it immediately.
GK's backline pffff......

If you order from Beachaudio, basslites are closer to 65/apiece, so more like 260 than 300

What's low end to You?

For different people, it usually means different things: different frequencies, different frequency range.

Most (budget) 410's I know of aren't capable of reproducing 40Hz (E fundamental) at any significant SLP. Not that it matters much, high SPL sub 50Hz region is about useless in most venues/stages anyway. If "mainstream" background music is performed, obviously.

You say the 15" didn't do much. How's the sensitivity on that cab compared with the BLX's? How's the phase between those two cabs?

Have You been able to do any comparing with other cabs/stacks? With Your bass and amp (+FX if any) of course.

And lastly, the tone is totally different up close and farther away. Which one You're after?

I'm a die hard DIYer, but replacing (working) drivers on a budget cab isn't what I consider a sensible thing to do. Not that I recommend You to blow the existing ones to smithereens just to justify the swap .

BTW, You do know that you have to tune the cab to the new speakers if you go that route?
Not a hard thing to do, but still requires some tools and some tinkering with a loudspeaker software.

Regards
Sam

another option is build a bfm omni cab. I built the 2x10 a while back and the low end response is great. It sounds louder and has deeper bass then alot of other cabs in the price range. I spent like 75$ on cab supplies, and since you already have drivers that saves you alot of money. who knows those gk drivers might sound way better in a new cab.

To t-bird. You nailed it. Low E fundamental sucks and I may have under played the 15's impact. It improved the tone a great deal, just still not there. After hearing everybodies input I think the best thing to do is replace the cab. Thank you all.
