Good used, versatile combo for around $300-400?

Sign in to disble this ad
Can anyone recommend a good versatile combo that can keep up with a moderate drummer with no PA support outdoors that can be found used for around $300-400? Ideally something made in USA and not too heavy, and that can handle a low B pretty well.

I've always been partial to Mesa but will consider other brands as well.

I bought an Acoustic B200 1x15 combo that I have really taken to. Brand new and it was only $350 from GC.
It suits the practice/rehearsal situation perfectly, and does very well in small-medium size venues. Its versatile - 6 band EQ, and has the options for DI and you can hook it up to an additional cab if you want to move more air.
I haven't tried it outdoors yet, though.

Not exactly sure what they go for used, but the Hartke Kickback 15 might be around that range. I've heard one in exactly the type of situation you describe, and it sounded great. Or, you could get a new G-K MB115. Seriously great amp for the cash. I'm partial to my Roland Cube 100, but I don't think it would be enough in your situation, especially if you're playing a five.

I picked up a Tubeworks 300 watt combo for $200 off Craigs, that thing is a monster! Huge tone, choice of tube or solid state preamp, seriously sounds fantastic. Lots of good deals on Craigs right now, in the Detroit area killer amps can be had for next to nothing. There was a guy with a Fender BXR300 head, price got all the way down to $80 before it disappeared! Too bad I spent my annual gear allowance already!

A fender rumble? With a moderate drummer outdoors with no PA support? Maybe if you are playing for 5 people and it will barely give you enough stage volume and your guitarist is on acoustic. That wouldnt even cut it at practice for me.

Id check out the GK MB115/210.

I cant think of anything else in your pricerange that can handle a moderate drummer outdoors with no PA support.

Check craigslist. You might find a deal.

And Im partial to Mesa stuff also, but I cant think of much in your pricerange.

Yeah, I've got my eye out for one of those Tubeworks RT-3300 heads or combos (especially the 2x10 version)...never tried one but I've heard all kinds of good things.

Had a Fender Bassman 100 with a 15" speaker. Not enough power. Picked up a Carvin BX515N combo. Great indoors or out, plus the BX 500 will power an extension cabinet easilly.

+1
(i got one used for 199)

Yes, Its heavier than a GK.
I got mine just to have for practice, though I've used it on two gigs (whwere I dint wanna use my full rig)
worked fine.(I did have PA support, but I alwayse do, even with 410 in a small bar)

Its kinda ironic...a lot of TBers will tell you that acoustic sux cuz they're cheap, but a lot of TBers also tell you to listen for yourself.then decide.

Philter I agree the Rumble will not work for him, I miss read the part about no pa support I also agree you are not going to find anything powerful enough in that price range

If you can kick in more $ like 600.00 I would go with this one
Gallien Krueger MB210 (2x10" 500W MB Bass Combo)
The MB210 2x10 bass combo amp from Gallien-Krueger delivers a big sound from an ultralight, compact package. At 33 pounds and 500W is what you will need at the very least.

Yeah I'm normally a 10's guy too, but I gotta say the 15 in this amp sounds great, nice and tight with plenty of lows. It's a great amp!

Look for a Fender Bassman 250 combo. Good power to two 10" speakers. They also used to make a 115 extension for this unit. I was just drooling over a Bassman Pro 400 combo, right here in the classified section, but that might be out of budget...

edit - he's only asking $350, but its local pickup only

I know. I hate to tell the guy, but if I just didn't place an order for a Portaflex setup, I'd love to jump on this. Then chase after an extension 115...

Low cost combo

Cheap, loud, light weight.

Pick two. You can't have all three unless you get lucky.

However, this setup was $275. Local Craigslist. It WILL cover an outdoor gig without PA support. However, it is heavy.
OTOH, Home Depot sells a heavy duty hand truck for $19.95 on sale. LOL
