Graphic EQ Amp Suggestions

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey bros. I'm looking for an amp head with a graphic EQ preferably 6 band with at least 500 watts power. So far I'm looking at a Trace Elliot since I've always stuck with them, but am looking to at least try out a few other options before making my decision.

i think one of the hartke amps has a big EQ on it not to mention tube pre amp and solid state and if memmory serves correct they even have compression built in too

not sure which one is the 500w one though i remember having an ah350 that was about 300w all i remember is it was a cracking amp especially for the price

Six bands of EQ here - you didn't say at what impedance you wanted at least 500 watts at. But no matter - this has it covered:

Carvin B2000

- Discrete Class A input stages
- 12AX7 preamp tube (in/out switchable)
- Active/Passive input gain switch with input CLIP indicator
- Preamp DRIVE and master VOLUME controls
- Six EQ controls: SUB BASS, BASS, LOW MID, MID, HIGH MID, and TREBLE
- Signal MUTE front panel switch (also controlled by optional FS22 footswitch)
- EFFECT LOOP front panel bypass switch (also controlled by optional FS22 footswitch)
- DIRECT OUT balanced XLR with independent LEVEL control, switchable "Pre-Post" and "Ground Lift", DC isolated
- TUNER output jack independent of MUTE switch
- Internal OPTO (optical isolation) clip-activated power amp limiter with "limiter free" normal operation
- Switchmode power supply that operates at 100,000 Hz delivering maximum efficiency while reducing weight
- Convenient auto-switching AC input for 120V 60 Hz or 240V 50 Hz
- High current combo SPEAKON™ connectors with 1/4" speaker inserts
- Metal shaft controls with threaded metal bushings mounted directly to front panel
- Power Output: 700w at 8 ohms, 1300w at 4ohms, 2050w at 2 ohms
- THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) is < 1.0%
- Tone Controls: ±12dB @ 40, 100, 400, 800, 2k, 6k (Hz)
- Drive Control: Varies input gain and harmonic content
- AC Requirements: Auto switching 120VAC 60 Hz/240VAC 50 Hz
- Rugged steel chassis
- Size: 2U rack mount, 19" wide x 10.5" deep x 3.5" high
- Weight: 14 lbs
- Made in San Diego, California

Not Really a fan of Hartke's to be totally honest. Every bassist I've seen use one I can barely hear.

Interested in the Carvin though.

I contemplated acting like I knew what impedance was and not appearing like a total tard but decided against it on account of people here are usually not jerks.

I guess I should've been more specific. I meant a head with the slider style graphic EQ

The easiest way to describe impedance is the resistance shown by your speaker cabs, expressed in ohms. If you poke around in some speaker and/or amp threads, the most common impedances are 8-ohms and 4-ohms, and your amp must be able to handle to impedance of the cabinet that you plan on matching it with. For example, an amp with a 4-ohm minimum load will happily handle an 8-ohm or 4-ohm cabinet, but you run the risk of damaging the amp if you go below 4 ohms (2 4-ohm cabinets, etc.).

There are probably better sites or threads on here, but I've found this one to be helpful concerning the basics of impedance : http://www.gollihurmusic.com/faq/31-...RSPECTIVE.html

To answer your question, I like the Mesa M9 Carbine

Wow. that's weirdly simple. I'm looking at an 8"10 or 6"10 cab, although after hearing Future Of The Left's punchy bass tone and his rig, I'm not so sure I'm open to suggestions, I'm completely new to "Rigs" so to speak, I've been playing through my Trace combo for a while now.

My local music store just got a carbine in so I'll give it a try.

The Carbines sound sweet. Can't remember if they have a graphic EQ though. Some of the Carvins have a graphic EQ.

I believe the M9 does, as well as semi-parametric.

The Carvin BX1500 has the graphic EQ + sem-parametric too. It's switchable too so you can EQ two different basses, then just flip the switch when you change. Light, power to burn, pre-amp tube, all the pro features, great price. It comes "rack" style but they also sell it in a head version.

The M9 has a graphic, but not a semi-parametric. It also has a compressor, which I find to be very usable for an in-amp unit.
