The grills can affect the projection of the sound?

I watched the different types of grills in several cabs, and for example, Avatar has a very open holes, while Hartke HyDrives and Ampeg Pro Neo, have very tight holes..

This has a reason to be? I can see that in the Pro Neo Cab, actually about 40% of the grill area is covered, and the other 60% are the holes of course!

There may be a very small quantifiable difference, but I'm skeptical that there would be any real world difference. Bass frequencies aren't very directional.

However, I've learned that grills that aren't screwed in tight enough can rattle to annoying effect.

other freqs are, though. but cab grills are designed to let the sound through, so if there is a difference, it's very slight and not really noteworthy imho.

It's not so much about letting frequencies through as it is about letting air through.

A speaker cone pumps in and out to move air. If there is too much resistance, it effects how your speaker(s) perform.

Too tight of a grill CLOTH can cause "breathing" problems. It creates an air resistance and is usually worst around ports - sometimes causing up to 1-2db loss of low frequencies if dirty or just to restrictive.

Grill PERF can affect the high frequency dispersion of a device but usually only affects VHF ( > 8kHz). A good example of this in action is the d&b T10 point-source/line array box.

http://www.dbaudio.com/en/systems/t-series/t10/

This box uses multiple perf types to try and create a 105x10ish degree line array dispersion pattern, but when the horn is rotated a quarter turn its a 90x35 point-source box. A neat concept to say the least.

Ever read speaker reviews in TAS or Stereophile?
