Grrr....Ampeg.

Well, I inherited an Ampeg 2x10 SVT HE cab from a friend of mine. Thought I was lucking into something....but the more I get into it the more I see it will become a money pit if I work on it any more.

Horn is shot. Speakers do not sound good. Checked all the wiring, seems to be OK except someone re-wired it to use the second 1/4" input.

Looking into the amount I am going to have to spend to get this thing back to spec, I'm considering just parting it out. So if anyone needs some corners or feet or any stuff like that, PM me. I'm just frustrated and spent all day trying to see if I could get this fixed and finally threw in the towel and wanted to vent.

I think a more appropriate thread title would be "Grrr... friends who abuse gear."

Agreed. I don't see how Ampeg is to blame for this.

A ported 3.5 cu ft box, all on its own, has to be worth something.

If it were mine, I'd bypass the crossover and tweeter, and put in a couple of tens I'd WinISD-modeled beforehand.

I think that cab has potential, but that's just me...

I believe there is a special place in hell for people that "part out" bass gear. I'll leave it up to your imagination what they do there.

Yeah, I know it is not Ampeg's fault. Just had my hopes up that I might be lucking into something good and it turned out not so good.

Another little tiny source of frustration is that I can't find a place to order replacement Ampeg parts from the company online. I looked at their website and "Support" and it gives me a list of authorized dealers and repair centers. Where does one go to order Ampeg replacement speakers and such? Do I have to make a phone call? (GASP!)

Thanks again Ray! Is this the official Ampeg site or is this a dealer who is an Ampeg enthusiast? Sounds like they have lots of refurbished and vintage parts. (and great recommendations for replacements for other cabs but not this one...)

Fliptops doesn't seem to sell OEM speakers either...those are "recommended" speakers that just about every speaker vender sells. I would pull the model number off of the blown speaker and ask an authorized repair shop to get you one just like it. Good luck!

fliptops is run by an ampeg enthusiast, but he does carry many official ampeg parts, but oem speakers aren't in his inventory. if ampeg still offers speakers for it, they should be available through an authorized ampeg dealer. however, i would (gasp!) call or email ampeg and see what they have to say.

Thanks Jimmy, I didn't see the speakers for this one listed...in this world of online inventory and ordering online it is strange to not be able to browse online and find the stuff you want, especially from the #1 name in bass amplification!
I did a search on TB and came up empty as far as a specific replacement speaker goes, many recommend getting Ampeg OEM but it is difficult finding out where they are, what they are, and how to get them!

Please note:
The SVT-210HE does not use the regular Ampeg 10". According to my Ampeg catalogues, the 10" driver is a cast frame unit just like the PR series. The horn I believe is the same low cost Foster/Fostex thing that "everybody" uses.

If you need OEM parts, you'll have to call. I've called them several times for parts, both when they were in St. Louis and after LOUD took over- and have always had great service. Otherwise you can check fliptops.net - they carry quite a few things you may need.

Horns are cheap, as for the speakers, you could have them re-coned for less money than new replacement speakers. And Why would someone have to re-wire to use a input jack that's already there? Was he trying to bi-amp the cab? Ask him what he was trying to do. If so you could just wire it back to original or order a new crossover plate from Ampeg. The whole thing should cost less than $150 and you'll have a basically new cab.

Something for nothing is, most often, worth what you pay for it. That said you can make this a project AND a learning experience. you'll learn how to wire drivers and crossovers. You'll learn how to use modelling software to discover what standard driver will work best in the cab. End result, if you do a proper job, is a speaker cabinet that's better than new.

Be positive and enjoy yourself.

You should go ahead and tell us what models of speakers are in that cab...we are all assuming that they are originals, and they might not be. I would then do some testing to verify that the drivers are actually damaged, and not just miswired, or hooked up to the xover incorrectly, or something like that. It's worth verifying what you really have there.
