Sign in to disble this ad
gk 1001rb mk2.

i was testing it out with a eden 8x10 whatever cab.

sizzle crackle pop and then fire.

What a hunk of $#!^. the kid working comes over and looks at me like it was my fault. I just handed him the bass back and said " good thing i did not wanna buy that or anything. you should actually check your used stuff before trading it in."

then i tried another 1001. This one actually worked, but i was not impressed by it really. I think i just dont like solid state amps anymore.

i blew up a behringer 410 at GC once. the sales rep walked over to me and i was expecting to get scolded. he looks at the cab, laughs, and says "that happens to those hunks of **** all the time". my only fond GC memory...

I killed an LMTube in GC a few months ago. Sometimes equipment fails. It can work fine one minute and croak the next. This is the same for all manufacturers and a statistical certainty.

to be fair, the 1001 rb2 is not a hunk of $#!^. you just happened to be the poor sap who plugged into a used and abused floor model at the wrong time. i've seen what customers do to those floor models at gc, and it ain't pretty.

Feel a little "pride", eh?

A number of details missing from the story here. For starters, For all we know, did you just come in and start ripping through the amp/cab at high volume without even looking at the connectivity between amp/cab?

And if where we're going with this, is something to the effect of "every item in every store should always be hooked up correctly so no matter what I'm interested in, I should just be able to come in and play whatever I want, when I want, and how I want, without having to inconvenience myself in thinking or asking about whether anything is hooked up correctly", well...

It's out right disrespectful what some people do to them. When I worked retail musiic, I've seen customers drop them (heads) because they felt the need to transfer an amp from say, a 4x10 to a 1x15, drive them and continue to play them when the amps, clipping, saw one dude actually kick the speaker grill to see how much well it actually protects the speakers.

I also have one friend that whenever he tries out an amp he boasts about how he goes in with the intention to actually try and break them because (and I quote) "I just have to see what its limits are and I'll never know that until I fry one."

Yeah, thanks for reminding me of why I think most people are douche bags and in need of serious

Everything you just said i did. i made sure it was connected correctly and that there was power going to it. And it was up maybe 1/4th to the woofer and the main volume set to like a little over a 1/4th. unlike the other jackasses who go into guitar center and crank everything to the damn max i had it up loud enough for me to hear and to get a little air moving. good lord if that had actually worked and i had it craked open running though a 8x10 i think people would have got angry.

Also, its not my problem that they dont check stuff before taking it in. And i dont really have a sense of "pride" in blowing up a $#!^^@ amp. I just find it funny how all theses gk fanboys talk them up so much yet the amps for sale page is always littered with them. The one i played that actually worked did not sound bad. I discovered it's deff. not what im into.

i know, im a horrible person because i left out some useless details that i felt i did not need to go over. But since you seem to assume i have no common sense as to check for things like that i'm glad i was now able to clear that up for you.

the OP said "I was testing it out" - unless he says otherwise, we ought to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he wasn't abusing the equipment or trying to test its limits.

Every thing can fail. I had 2 dud Fender Bassman combos in a row, traded for a GK and I've been happy ever since. One bad GK amp doesn't make the whole brand bad. No company can boast 100% reliability.

Thats true, but between seeing so many traded in and so many for sale, why would anybody want one?

You can often hear lots of interesting sounds at GC, and sometimes it's a unique experience!

I guess I should preface this with the fact that I like GK. That being said, just because you don't like them no one should? I see lots of Ampeg for sale, is it crap? Or SWR, or MarkBass, etc..? The reason you see alot of those brands for sale is because they are the largest manufacturers of bass gear. I know GK is not the sound for everyone, but some people do like it, myself included. Just like everyone else has said, no company is 100% reliable. Plus it was used, who knows what the person that owned it prior did to it. I'm not trying to be mean, or flame you or anything like that, I'm just saying it sounds pretty gear snobish to me.

If you're basing your judgement on a piece of gear by a GC floor model then you might not be satisfied by anything you play there . . .

The title to this thread is very funny! It should become a regular feature on TB.
