Guitar amp with Bass Cab

Sign in to disble this ad
Dear fellow bassists,

Recently I bought an Ampeg SVT3 Pro with the classic 2x10 and 1x15 cabinets.

Unfortunately I am not that happy with the sound of the amp, but I really like the cabinets!

My idea is to hook up my Marshall JCM2000 to the bass cabinets to see if I like that better.

Is this possible or will it hurt some gear?

Thanks and regards!

Isn't the 'sound of the amp' that you're not 'happy with' coming out of the cabinets that you 'really like'?

How can this be?

Wont hurt your gear at all + you might really like what you hear. I prefer high gain guitar heads with bass cabs for both bass and guitar...

As long as the impedence matches up you should be fine.

I once ran an AIMS 100 guitar watt head (cheapass Marshall wannabe) thru an Ampeg 50 watt 2x15 (B-25B?) cab, and I think I might have blown the speakers, because it sounded like total crap. This was when i was totally cluleless about this kinda stuff (matching impedances and wattage ratings) and I trusted the salesman that sold me that combination that it would work. It's only much later I realized I got ripped off. Maybe I'm not being realistic, but I will never use a guitar head thru a bass cabinet like that again.

I have tried it, guess what...

It sounds AWESOME!

There is only 1 thing on my mind, I tried it with 1 cab at 8 ohm, but I only have 1 speaker cable with jackplugs...
Can I put that from the marshall at 4 Ohm to cabinet A, and then with a speakon jack cable to cabinet B, or do they both need to be of the same sort?

Can you Daisy chain those cabs? Go from the input of cab A to the input of cab B, then connect cab A or B to the Amp. Just make sure the amp is set @ 4 ohms...

Usually I use 2 speakonjack cables, from the amp to Cab A, and from Cab A to Cab B.

But now I would like to use 2 kinds of cables since my Marshall doesn't have a Speakon out, I don't know if they are connected inside.

Yep, folks have been doing this for years. My old Ampeg V4 is technically a guitar amp but so many people used it for bass that Ampeg came out with a "bass" version (the V4B) with only minor tweaks.

And it works the other way, too. The original Fender Bassman was a bass amp that sounded killer with guitar so that's the direction it's evolved.
