Is it possible to use a guitar amp head with a bass comp amp

Yes, as long as the signal from the head is connected to the speakers at the right impedance. Amp part of the combo can be disengaged or bypassed by not powering it on.

Make sure the amp head is the only wired to the speaker, and the speaker is not wired to the combo amp. I have seen people try to wire a separate amp into combo amp speakers without disconnecting the combo amp. Then they wonder why the combo amp now has very limited volume and a very loud hum ("but I didn't have the combo head turned on when I was playing through the speaker").
