when i head has a solid state knob and a tube knob what does that mean??? can only one be used or can they both be adjusted?

Solid state is a flat eq-ed pre-amp. Tube is a non-flat eq-ed pre-amp. You can use both or either separately, but if you use any of the tube pre, then an increase of the ss pre will simply increase pre-amp gain.
