I bought one of these when they came out *fail-fail-fail*
while it wasn't a bad sounding cab, those aluminum coned pos speakers would crack just looking at them. nice idea but did they even test those pieces of garbage?
after cracking two of the speaker cones I gave up on the cab completely and it's been collecting dust for about 15 years.
I now need a portable cab for small gigs and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a real speaker that I could use to replace the junk that's in there?
this things headed for the landfill otherwise.

You could try some eminence speakers. They make a neo aluminum cone that might work in that cab. http://eminence.com/bassguitar_speak...0&SUB_CAT_ID=5

I missed a Peavey TVX210 for $130.00 last night, that wouldv'e been perfect. two days ago I bought a TVX4x12 for $130.00, go figure, it weighs as much as my 8x10 so it's not portable either. I'm just trying to save this hartke cab from getting scrapped, maybe I can get some use out of it.

Call Larry Hartke and tell him exactly what you said in this thread. 201-680-8153. That is his cell number, and he is a helluva guy. He may just have a suggestion, or he may even cut you a deal. What do you have to lose? And you might have a lot to gain.
I've been playing 410XL's for years, without a single hiccup, even with my LH1000 head. I also have a 210XL in my studio that has never given a problem. And we are a 3-piece power trio, so we play LOUD. Maybe your's is an old design speaker or you got a lemon, but I've busted many a paper speaker cone over the years, and never an aluminum one.
I'm getting ready to go to the new HyDrive cabs, but I did ask Larry (yes, he will really answer the phone) if I could put HyDrive speakers in my 410XL cab, and he said yes, but the holes aren't perfectly aligned, so you would have to drill some new bolt holes for the HyDrive speaker, but otherwise would drop right in. The HyDrive speaker is a paper/aluminum hybrid with a neo magnet. 250 watts each, and a 4x10 with them only weights around 60lbs. Good enough for Victor Wooten, Stu Hamm, Will Lee, & Jack Bruce, and no matter how cheap they got them, they would not tolerate blowing speakers.
Best of luck to you, and don't be too shy to call him. He loves to talk bass (no pun intended) .

I'm not upset with Hartke the person, more with the concept of aluminum speaker cones.

I replaced mine with Eminence Basslite-S2010 ( http://eminence.com/pdf/basslite-s2010.pdf) and absolutly love it. Completly rewired the cab with 12g (may be 14 but I believe it was 12) wire and I get complaments all of the time, pretty cheap also. Goodluck!

He's very friendly, and he doesn't try to be something he's not. He's just a bassman, really, who wants to do whatever he can to promote bass and bassists.
For some reason, and I may be wrong, but it seems there is another problem somewhere besides the aluminum cone speakers. Too many folks have gigged them for too many years for them to be a complete p.o.s. Way underpowering or overpowering them can cause problems, as well as power surges. I keep my compressor on all the time now, to avoid those peaks and a surges. But that will nuke any speaker. Speakers keep improving also, so if yours are 10-15 years old or more, even the same brand will be better now.
CD

CD | the only reason I can safely single out the aluminum cones as the problem is because, I have never cracked a cone on any other speaker (fibre doesn't crack in my experience) I've ever owned. not counting my PA, I currently own three 2x15 cabs, one 8x10, six 4x12's, three 2x12's, and one Hartke 410. the only cab I own that I've ever had a problem with (twice) is the Hartke. I own compressors by Drawmer, DBX, Brooke Siren Systems, etc. I'm a live sound engineer and I know what I'm doing.

Just not a common problem.

CD | I wasn't insulted at all you've been nothing but helpful.
I'll say one thing, I was using this cab in a really loud band (competing with two 100w JMP halfstacks) so it was definitely being called upon to deliver (it was part of a bi-amp rig).
maybe I just go a lemon.
