Hartke HA3500 + Ashdown MAG 410???

Sign in to disble this ad
First post here on TalkBass so be nice! Couldn't find any posts on this so here it goes. I'm in the process of getting my hands on my first 'real' amp and wondering what are your thoughts on this combination? I'm torn between the Hartke HA3500-VX410 and Ashdown Mag300-Mag 410 rigs. But the idea intrigued me if i had the hartke head with the ashdown cab. Would this be suitable for a 4 piece hard rock/metal band? Or am i better off with the same brand head/cab? These amps i mentioned are the limit of my budget. (Live in Australia - more expensive). No local music shops stock these brands so i'm half relying on your thoughts/opinions/experience to help me out.

Cheers from Australia!

I have had the Hartke/VX combination and I can say it goes pretty loud. Put a tube-based effect in front of it for some overdrive/fuzz (if wished for).

The Ashdown rig certainly has the looks but I can't comment on it.

And yes, it is possible to swap head/cab ... but my guess is if you stick to one brand you can get a package deal

The hartke ha3500 is a great head and its 350 watts seems louder than most other 500 watt heads i have tried.

thanks for the replies. From your experiences which brand seem to have reliabilty issues. From what I have read Hartke and Ashdown seem to be on par with each other in terms of quality would you agree?

I have The Ashdown Mag 410 combo, replaced an old SWR redhead that wasnt thumping like it used to with it. The amp itself is impressive, love the compressor, and being able to completely bypass the EQ while still being able to boost the lows has really come in handy. The five band EQ itself is exceptional in this price range. Even the DI has been reliable, which in my experience with solid state gear, often isn't the case with even high end heads.

Those blueline speakers on the other hand... they're growly, but I didn't feel they thumped hard enough and replaced them with Eminence speakers. Wasn't cheap, man. And its somewhat heavy, so you're going to want casters.

If I were to do it over again, I'd have bought the head and picked up a different 4x10 cab (preferably an old SWR Goliath III 4x10). That said, I did prefer this combo's overall tone and versatility over any of the Hartkes I tried, including the XV
