Hartke Hydrive 210C w/hissing Tweeter??

Sign in to disble this ad
Just bought a Hartke Hydrive 210C about a week ago from Sam Ash. Now when I went there, it was early and nobody was in the store so I didn't have to turn the volume up too high on Hartke Hydrive 210C when testing it. So anyway I bought it and when I got home, I turned volume up a little and had treble at 3 (range from -5 to 5) and it seems speaker has a humming sound. Nothing so drastic, at least at that EQ.

So then I begin testing what makes my amp hum and hiss. Everything I tested, is with the common smiley face Graphic EQ. Without bass plugged in.(Bass plugged in does not change anything)

Each of these are tested individually.

1. When I turn the tweeter on, instant hiss. It becomes annoying when the EQ is set at Volume 7/10
2.Hitting the Bass Attack Overdrive makes it hiss. Annoying when Briteness becomes 5/10.
3. Compression more than 4/10 makes it whoosh or hum very very low. But annoying.
4. Volume up past 7 by itself, makes a low, low static hum.
5. Switching from dry to effect with and "On" Bass Attack Overdrive makes it begin to hiss.
6.Harmonics with and "On" Bass Attack Overdrive makes a sound I cannot describe, but it sounds like thru the speakers I can hear the knob turning.
7. Adding treble past 2 or 3 (range -5 to 5) and its hissing a fair amount

Now if I mix the above together, it begins to hum and hiss with "Annoying Rating" of 5 out of 10 when tweeter on. When mix and match with tweeter off 2 or 3 out of 10.

Now I am told that all amps make some sound, especially when tweeter is on or treble is turned up. But I just cannot believe that because, even though I;ve never been to a live show, I cannot imagine someone micing that sound through a PA system. And when volume is up even a low hum would start to get on peoples nerves I would think. My dad told me it could also be the apartment we live in with the wiring in the walls. I think my amp just doesn;t handle treble well...

I have a 3 weeks to take it back for a full refund.. Any thoughts???

Some amps hiss more than others. My GK MB200 hardly hisses even when I boost treble. Unless I sit right in fron of my Promethean, I don't hear hiss. My Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0/10T is even quieter. Even when treble is maxed, unless I glue my ear to the tweeter, I don't hear hiss.

I cannot stand excessive hum, hiss or white noise generated by an amp. I've been through many amps and I'm happy with my current ones. If hiss bothers you, you just need to buy a quieter amp.
