Has the Ampeg SVT-7 Pro been modified?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi gang.

I got one back in January of 2010. I very much enjoyed the tone and weight but when pushed mine would cut out for a millisecond and then come back on. It seemed to be going into "safe" mode way to quickly. I returned it and happily went back to the Ampeg SVT-4 Pro's I've used for the last 14 years.

Ampeg SVT 7 Pro arriving tomorrow !!!!

I read somewhere that there have been mod's on the 7 Pro's and I'm wondering what they are and if this situation was addressed.

Thanks for any input as I want to try another one for my back's sake!!!

I had the exact same issue with mine, which is why I chose a 4 pro! I don't know if it's been modded, but when you lose sound for a few seconds, it's the limiter, which is not defeatable, kicking in.

From other threads, my understanding is that there have been several revisions.
I just got mine about a month ago, and the revision # is: C00.
I'm assuming that "C" is the 3rd. revision.
JimmyM should be here soon to clarify.
I'm just a hobby player, but I'm enjoying mine.

Actually, the only things I know about the 7 Pro's early version problems I learned from Tom Bowlus. Wish I had one, though I can't imagine ever turning one up that loud where it would be an issue for me, though

Yes, it has been. I think the original version was "Rev A" and I believe they are now on "Rev C." I'm working on an SVT-7Pro review for issue #7, but if you have a "Rev A" model currently, I would talk to Ampeg about an update.

I haven't heard back, so I'll ask again if anyone knows for certain if amp still shuts down for a millisecond at peak levels.

Thanks all !

I was just SLAMMING through a Rev C 7Pro last night, and it never shut down.

I know this is an old thread. I'm looking at buying the 7 Pro too. Wondering if anyone is noticing any more problems with Rev C or if Ampeg says they have corrected the problem?

Thanks

Same here, been rocking the Pro7 rev c for a few months and no issues with shutting down.....and for what it's worth, I play it pretty loud.

I have had my rev C. for about 6 months with 0 issues.
However, I have read posts on rev Cs with the very issues.

SVT7 v PF500?

I was watching a few vids on YOUZTUBE, of both these amps.

Sure seems like the PF500 was getting alot more growly, grindy, tubey tone than the 7. 'Course that's prolly cause folks were making them each sound that way.

I like the 1000 watts @ 4 ohms the 7 offers; 1000 watts is that correct? But I was diggin the tone of the 500 more. Can the SVT 7 get there too or does it only stay as clean as what I heard on that vid. And does it have a good amount of punch with 1K watts?

I have a STM-900 so don't need a amp with abuncha tube-tone. But I'm looking for its counterpart. Would the SVT 7 be a good choice? Was also thinking bout the GK MB800? Others?

Also, there are alot more vids of the 500 than the 7 so not a real fair comparison of tone capabilities.

I dunno Ernie, I've only played the PF500 once live(well at a practice) & a cuppla times in-store. I liked the 500, but I gotta good deal on the 7 PRO & the (single) tube pre appealed to me.
I'm SURE glad I got over the 500, as some gigs I do, we're DAMN loud & I'm glad I can 'cruise' with the 7 PRO.
As far as tone- I've often described it as being close to my old SVTII(NP) - maybe it's the 1Kw power, but this 7PRO sure packs a wallop! Not 'all tube' tone really, but the nice on-board comp & the monstrous power helps to give this a real 'heft' to it & a real thick tone.
I aint good at describing tones, so this'll have to do.
IMO, it's one of THE tubey-est sounding class D/hybrids - but -also IMO- that's partly coz of the AMPEG tone it's built with as well as the features I mentioned already.
If I wasn't going for a TUBE tone, AMPEG certainly wouldn't be on my list. YMMV.

Oh & -obviously- I'm still using my 7PRO without ONE problem at both real loud & pretty quiet gigs. Love it.

thanks rodl...

yeah kinda figured that; just that those lil Ampeg heads sound so nice when I listen to em w/headphones, gets me GASsy.

I can prolly do with the amps I have now, GB-900, LMII & F1 that get the most use. I pair them up with different basses n cabs and it really works well.

Its just that I watched alota gear thru most of 2011 online stores, TB classifieds, Craigslist and did not buy anything. Wife said, YAY!

Its always a slow start first of year, so I got more time than gigs on my hands....always dangerous. But I gotta gig tonite and two next weekend, so I'll be happy to play my gear I own once again. Sad huh?

Have a good 2012 Mate.

Cheers mate. I know what ya mean. '11 was a year of mainly selling gear I no longer 'needed', so now I've got more or less what I need now Dangerous too.
