Question Head and cab connection

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Behringer BB410A combo and I am currently in the process of upgrading to a better setup. Since I'm on a budget I'm planning on buying a head first and using it with my current cab/combo and then continuing to save up for a better cab. I having been looking at the Ashdown ABM 500 Evo II, but it has only one 1/4" cable connection and my Behringer cab has two cables coming out the back. Is it okay to connect the new head to just one of the cables or should I wait to get a new head and cab at the same time?

Btw my cab is 4ohms and the ABM 500 is 4 ohms.

The second connector on the cab is for daisy chaining to another cab. This would only be possible for a head capable of going lower than 4ohms. So in your case, don't worry about it, just connect your speaker out to the left side connector on the cab. And you're of making noise.

I think you need to clarify. The behringer is a combo amp, yes? It has how many spkrs? 4 10's? Then, are we talking about cables coming out, or spkr outputs? The way it reads now, the combo amp has spkr cables coming out the back of the combo, but I don't think that's right. mORE INFO, EVEN PICTURES WOULD HELP. caps lock accident, excuse me.

First, unless your combo amp is able to completely disconnect the wiring between the amplifier portion and the speaker portion you can't use just the speaker portion with another head.

Some combos (very very few) have a speaker output jack on the back of the amplifier section that you connect to the speaker portion with a speaker cable. Usually this cable is hard wired into the speaker box and a very short cord comes out of the top of the cabinet and is used to plug into the head.

Unless you can disconnect the cab from the amplifier portion, don't try plugging a head into it anywhere!

The cabinet potion probably has additional jacks in the back (I doubt very much it has cords coming out of it). If so, odds are these jacks are to be used for connecting a second cabinet to it, probably because the amplifier portion of your combo is able to handle a 4 ohm load (if it is at all), and the internal cabinet is 8 ohms. Even so, it's very unusual to have a parallel jack in the speaker portion of a combo - instead they generally have an extension speaker out jack in the back of the amplifier section of the combo.

IvanMike,

yes i believe it is hardwired in to the combo and a two small cables come out the back to connect to the head

so i should definitely not try to use another head?
