Head dilemma

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi folks, I'm hoping you can help me with a bit of a dilemma I have. You'll probably glean that I'm a bit of a technophobe but here goes..

I currently use a Markbass LM Tube 500 and a few weeks ago was offered a UL410 Series II in mint condition for a really good price so I kinda ignored the fact it was only an 8 ohm unit and snapped it up.

I have to say it sounds really good at ‘house volume’ and the tone is perfect for me but I haven’t tried it with my band yet – a six piece folk rock band.

I really would like to keep the head and I’m sure It’ll give me enough volume for my needs but I’m a little concerned that the UL410 is only receiving 300 watts which probably isn’t enough for the cab.

Another reason I'd like to keep the head is I also use it with a single Aguilar GS112 for rehearsals and small / acoustic gigs and it's perfect for that.

Do I really need something more powerful that’ll put say - 500 watts into the cab at 8 ohms, ie; a Shuttle 9 or an LM Tube 800 etc. and if I do buy one of those, will I be able to use that with the Aguilar or do I just accept that I may need 2 heads?

It should be fine, the cab doesn't "require" any particular wattage, it will take those 300 watts, and I would think, be plenty loud. If you were to need even more volume, adding a 2nd 8 ohm 4x10 would kill.

Thanks RickenBoogie - I think I just read somewhere once that 'underpowering' a cab can cause some damage to the drivers.

i'm sure you did, but it's bullcrap. if it were true, amps wouldn't have volume knobs. only overpowering blows speakers.
