Question Head Through PA, questions about tips and guide lines

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello Talkbass!

I know there have been asked similar questions, but i need to be sure about some things..

I have just bought an Ampeg SVT CLASSIC + an 8x10 ampeg cab to go with it.

Since the cab is very heavy, im just gonna have it standing in my bands practice room, because i dont want to move it everytime we have to play.

I will keep the head at home though, for when i play alone, so i will still be able to get a nice Ampeg sound. But the problem is, that the Ampeg cap is the only bass cab ive got.

I have a pretty descent PA system, and a Power mixer, so my question is..

1. Will i be able to put my Head through the mixer (and still get a good sound)?
It will look like this..
1.bass>2.SVT CLASSIC HEAD>3.Power Mixer>4.PA CABS/speakers.

2. What line out/output should i use?
3. Are there things i need to watch out for? (Ohms fx?)

4. Just in general, what is a good idea, and what is not..

Thanks in advance!
-Kasper

Exclamation

If you run the CL without speakers attached you will damage the amp!!!!
Get a cheap light cab to hook up to at home!

Use the preamp out or the DI out to your mixer AFTER hooking up at speaker cab.

You have to have the svt (and most other tube heads) hooked up to some load or you can damage it. You could get a small 4ohm cab to run it with if you don't want to drag around the 810.

Im a bit confused here.. I have learnt that using the amp without any load, will damage it, but im a bit confused.. Will i be able to do as i described? Or will it damage it? Does it has to be a regular cab?

Yes, you need a cab or equivalent load in the speaker output at all times (either 4 or 8 ohms). You CANNOT send the "speaker out" to the PA or any input except a passive speaker or you will damage not only the Ampeg but the input as well. However, you can keep the master volume low through the amp into the cab if you wish, and use either the DI (XLR-thingy) or "line out" out into the PA's inputs, then control the volume there if you wish.

There's no reason you can't use a PA cab as if it was a bass cab.
Depending on the PA cab in question, you might have to go easy on the volume and/or bass boost with your EQ.

Okay, so if i run the amp directly in to an 4ohm passive speaker, it will be fine? (I will keep in mind, that i have to be carefull with the volume.. )

As long as your amp is good to run a 4ohm load, you're golden.
