Head wattage into cab

Sign in to disble this ad
I need help understanding how to combine a head to a cab. So lets say I have a 250w head, do I need a 250w cab (I know that cabs dont produce watts its just their handeling)? Also will a 250w head power two 250w cabs or would you need a 500w head to power two 250w cabs?

No real relation between the two. Can mismatch watts either way, and still be fine, unless you make a special effort to break things, and even then loads more cab watts won't make you safe. Pretty much ignore the watts, if it all starts farting out, you need more speakers.

Impedance (ohms) is the one you need to understand, check the wiki and/or do a search.

Yes, it will power them.

The wattage is split between the two cabs. Each will get 125 watts. This is fine.

Ohms you must really understand, because errors in that area can break your amp. If each of the 250 watt cabs is 8 ohms, together they will usually be a 4 ohm load. If your head is solid state (as opposed to tube), it will also put out more wattage with a 4 ohm load than with an 8 ohm one. That is, of course, if it's compatible with a 4 ohm load.
