I use and trust Headphone.com(Headroom), as a very complete review source. If it isn't on their site, it is probably not worth worrying about. My Senn HD650's are still great after all these years, I've used them for everything from playing my Roland V kit, joyous listening out of the RME Babyface, and of course practicing with the Carvin MB12 late at night. Grado has a particular sound, some like others do not. Test Grado before you buy to determine where you fit in the spectrum! I like them fine, though of course do not own any. Most headphones will love the extra kick of an amp, you will too.

I'm a radio producer, so I've worn headphones for 6 hours/day for the last 10 years.. For me, you can't beat the Sony MDR-7506s.. I prefer the sound a comfort of my MDR-7509HDs, but the 7506s are much easier to fix.

Very different sounds - the 7506s are pretty transparent to my ears. Very clear and un-muddied. The 7509HDs are much warmer/bassier, but their sound may also be a bit more colored.

The 7506s do shock you if it's dry and you're on carpet, though :-)

I've tried a few different Senns, but they never did it for me. YMMV

Another Sony 7506 user here.

I use them for daily practice and as my transducer of choice for running sound or in the studio.

All of the parts are readily available from Sony.

Frankly, there are many good sounding cans on the market. Find one you can live with and get used to how they sound. Once you are familiar with their traits, it is pretty easy to learn how to listen past their foibles.

Check out headphone.com.

I think there is a huge difference in sound did you can spring for a mid price set from sennheiser or AKG. Senn 280s are ok but are really a compromise in tone to get the sealed design you need for tracking. At home, an open design gives much better sound and comfort. I love 545s and 555s, but I'm not sure if they make them anymore. Sennheiser usually has something in the line that is a "cheaper 600". That's what you want. The 600s are expensive and are tuned for classical music, I think they sound too contoured or smoothed.

Grados are not comfortable and sound too bassy.

7506s sound really harsh to me, and are not comfortable.

My brutally honest $.02

Beyerdynamic makes a great pair of cans. Sounds great and quite comfortable. I think the most popular model is the DT770.

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD280's, and while they do sound good they're a little tight on my huge noggin.

Well for right now I'm using a set of JVC HA-NC80 Noise Cancelling Head Monitors in my little home studio and although they're not AKG's 240's ( which I've still used for years ) they are not bad , hell at $ 24.99 + tax I figured I 'd give them a shot... Well they sure as hell are better than my son's pair of "Beats by dre" head cans .

2 weeks ago our engineer was sitting at the console and the band that was being recorded asked if they could use their own headphones.....The engineer replies "Sure! As long as they aren't those damn Dr Dre headphones"......

The guitar player looks kind of sad and says "Uh..OK...guess we'll use the studios"........

Our Engineer is not a fan..........

I've been using Beyerdynamic DT-250 for years. I like how they sound and comfort is important for long sessions.

I really like my Shure SRH840s. Their price went down when the 940s came out.

+1. A lot of Grado users on TB, first time I've seen that comment.

There was a thread yesterday already, in which I commented about my Yamaha HPH-200.
They are right in your price range and I'm very happy with them.

I would go with Beyer Dynamic DT100 'phones.

They have been the studio standard worldwide for years. All parts are replaceable too.

Flat response and uber comfortable.....

Samson SR850. Dirt cheap. 50mm drivers easily handle bass. Great sound.

Sony MDR-7506. Accurate, portable and repairable.

I have the Grado SR60's and when I turn up the bass more than whisper-quiet out of my amp (EBS 60Watt), I get all kinda of fuzzing and some weird clicking noise. Are my headphones just broken?
