Help/Advice Old Traynor Cab

Sign in to disble this ad
Fellow TB’ers
First off, sorry for the long post, I’ve been lurking here forever, and I searched pretty long looking for an answer before I posted this, so I’m hoping someone can help me, or point me in the general direction of help.
I’ve started playing again after about a 15 year hiatus (typical, getting the band back together thing) I had all my equipment scattered here and there, I’ve managed to round most of everything up.

I have a Traynor 410 cab, that I bought in the late 80’s early 90’s. It’s in decent shape, but I had a speaker go on me a few weeks ago. I don’t know which one, I didn’t pull the cover off during while we were jamming to see. I bought one of those Acoustic 410s at GC last week, and I took the Traynor back home with me to try to repair.

I left my head at rehearsal space (about an hour away), so I’m trying to find out what impedance the speakers (and cab) are and which speaker is bad.

The name plate on the back is totally wore off, so don’t even know what model I am dealing with. I could make out that it was a ‘Yorkville Sound’ .The cover has an angle to it, and I bought a matching Traynor head with it at the time. Which, I soon replaced with a Sunn Coli 300 (I still have the Sunn).

I took the cover off, took the speakers out and tested them with my multi-meter. I was getting a DC resistance reading of 14.6 ohm, which I assume is a 16 ohm speaker. However, I cannot get a reading on one of the speakers, it reads just a flat ‘1’, and I also cannot get a continuity signal across the terminals. I’m assuming this is the ‘bad’ speaker?
I’m guessing that I have four 16ohm speakers in parallel for a total impedance of 4 ohms?

Do my assumptions sound correct? I would like to try to replace the speaker and add this to my current rig to get more power from the Sunn (the Acoustic I purchased is 8ohms).

Any one recommend a site to get a 16ohm 10in speaker at a good price?

Thanks in advance for all your great advice on these forums, I’ve learned TONS so far!
Rick

This might help identify the cab:

Also, I've seen a guy with ebay auctions for replacement and reconed Yorkville drivers. You may have to search completed listings to find it. I'd call Yorkville if possible, they may be able to walk you through identifying it, once you are in front of the cabinet and with the driver in hand. Maybe worst case the ebay guy can recone it for you. While I enjoy the unexpected results of throwing random drivers in cabinets 9maybe I just like the reaction it gets from the folks who know better here on TB), if it was a cab I used for gigs I'd look for a direct replacement, or one that's really really close to the original specs.

Good Luck!

These guys do really good repair and reconing of speakers..

speaker repair & loudspeaker reconing

They serviced all the original speakers in my 8x10 Traynor cabs.

I never had to buy one new speaker, and some of them were pretty bad to begin with.
