Help with Ampeg SVT 18

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everybody.I just bought the aforementioned cab and I want to make sure I'm doing things right. The jackplate on the back has two jack inputs and two Speakon inputs, and I'm running a MarkBass F series Ltd Edition through it.The head has two 8 ohms outputs, so I was wondering if I'm doing the right thing by using both,or if I have to only use one to run the cab at 4 ohm.

Thank you for reading

Only plug one cable in. If the cab is 8ohms it will only ever be 8ohms. To run 4ohms you'll need another 8ohm cab. Just running 2 cables out of the amp will not change the impedance.

same advice. one cable will give you 4 ohms, since the cab is 4 ohms. do not connect 2 cables

Would I damage the cab if I connected 2 cables then?

Might be better to find a head that has output at around 500 watts @ 4 ohms that the SVT18 is rated at.

I did temporarily fry the crap out of my SVT-III Pro by plugging in both outputs to inputs on the back of my cab.

Those extra inputs are for daisy chaining ONLY.

it probably wouldn't damage the head or the cab since the head's output jacks are most likely in parallel and the cab's jacks certainly are, but there's absoultely no reason or benefit to do it.

The 2 x 8 ohm outputs on the head probably means no less than 8 ohm each if both are used. Hartke does the same thing.

The last time I saw one of those cabs was probably 12-15 years ago. Do you have any pics?

He's already done that (for all that it matters, which is not at all) - that's exactly what the F1/F500 puts out.

Mine's an older version tho, and puts out 450 watts at 4 ohm...I tried the cab at rehearsal this afternoon and I'm definitely satisfied, it's a big upgrade from my previous cabinet (an older Gallien Krueger 4x12")
