thinking about a Traynor yba 200....
don't want to deal with an svt's weight. i play a hofner club bass primarily and will be including either a jazz or p bass as well very soon. i'm selling my eden 600 roadrunner head (if anybody wants to trade or buy) and was feeling like the traynor was the best lower priced substitute for an svt.
my band's sound is very sixties/early seventies glam. (bowie, beatles, jp jones, entwistle, wyman).... so i'm figuring svt is where i want to be... thought about some kind of sunn but don't know what to get.
i have an epifani 2x12 that i was going to try the traynor with... but am open to hearing suggestions on how this pairing would or would not work and what might sound good with the traynor and the hofner and a jazz/p bass.
or other amps comparable to the traynor as well.
also... i'd be interested to hear opinions on a great fuzz pedal.
thanks so much guys.
lemme know what you think.

The YBA-200's great and light, but a number of people feel that it's quiet for a 200 watter, but it was enough for my needs. At that price range, the closest competitor is a Peavey, but it seemed more aggressive than I needed it to be. FWIW, I tried it out just to get my guitarists to stop bugging me about going all-tube, but it ended up turning me onto tube amps, bigger and heavier ones. If you're looking for the SVT sound, you could probably throw a VT Bass in front, but nothing nails the Ampeg sound better than Ampegs.

Consider a YBA-300 instead. It's supposed to be an improvement on the YBA-200 and should be available soon from retailers.

Among vintage Sunn amps, I'd look for a 2000S. 4 x KT88 or 6550

If I were in your shoes, an Ampeg SVT would be my choice.

svt soooo heavy!!!!

it's just such a burden around nyc and on the road.
not practical... i'll get one inevitably but it feels unnecessary right now.
the traynor 300 sounds cool...
****** thing is... no one in all of nyc carries them it seems... so i can't even try one.
thanks guys

It might not be loud enough for your gigs (do you have good PA support?), but go ahead and grab a YBA-200 and find out for yourself. I don't know how it will pair with your Epi 2x12. The YBA-200 has about the lowest weight you'll find for a 200w tube amp.

The YBA-300 is not yet widely available but it's posted for sale at a couple online retailers so far.

You may want to post in the 'Effects' sub-forum to ask about fuzz pedals. For the price, I like the Way Huge Swollen Pickle. My favorite bass fuzz is a D*A*M Ezekiel 25:17, but it's discontinued, expensive, and hard to find. There are many, many fuzz pedals out there and I've only tried a small minority of them.

i found a sunn 2000s nearby as well as a b12 .... i may just buy them both. have the sunn just cause it rules and the b12 for smaller gigs.
the b12 has had some work done... was wondering if anyone had thoughts on what i should offer for it... here are the mods.
1965 AMPEG SB-12 ALL TUBE PORTAFLEX AMPLIFIER
……for guitar or bass

Up for sale is a restored example of a classic Ampeg tube amplifier. This model is much sought after for its legendary tone.
This amplifier has had all the major capacitors replaced to restore the power supply which is vital for proper tone and reliability. The speaker grill cloth has been replaced with the proper vintage type as well as the handle and latches to secure the amp. The pre-amp/driver 12AX7s are new Electro Harmonix and the 7868 outputs and 5AR4 have been recently replaced with new Sovteks. The speaker to amp connection has been upgraded and a new heavy duty cable added to ensure reliability. Lastly, the speaker has been replaced with a 12” heavy duty Eminence.

the sunn hasn't been played much since the early eighties... any thoughts on what kind of work it would need and how much it would cost.
how much should i offer for the b-12 and how much for the sunn?
thanks so much.
