Help with Custom Cab ideas

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello TB nation.

I'm looking for input on having some custom cabs built.

I most likely will contact Low Down Sound to get a qoute, but just wanted to have more a specific idea of what I'm going for before contacting Don.

I am basically technically ignorant as to specifics of cabinet design and such, so bear with me.

I am looking for a two cab setup. One cab will be a 2-way 1x15 with a tweeter or possibly a 6" speaker. The other cab would be a 1-way 1x15 with no HF/tweeter.

Sound goal wise, I'm really looking for a versatile sounding rig that can really do "old-school" and "modern". I would like both cabs to compliment each other, but sound different from each other, and great as stand-alone cabs.

Another goal would be having both cabs each be under 50 lbs.

I've read a bit about the fEarful design. Can someone describe what those cabs sound like? Is the top-end really modern??

Any input at all on how to achieve this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Paraphrasing what I've learned of the fEarfuls, which are truly great designs, if you omit the horn/tweeter element and keep it a two-way 15/6, it's not 'modern' in the ...er...classic sense. Smooth and authoritative, but not zingy or harsh.

To answer your other question, I think a fEarful 15/6 and maybe a single Kappalite 3015 (non-LF) version in a similar box as the fEarful, but the internal volume reduced to optimize the 3015. Keep the baffle dimensions and port size similar, but maybe reduce the depth and adjust the shelf port as required. That way they look the same from the front.

I think the single 3015 does Old School very convincingly.

I would 100% suggest Ukiah Bass's setup; a 12/6 and 15/6 designed to stack with the midranges vertically arrayed. Each weighs under 50lbs (The 12/6 under 40 by a lot).
