Help! GK1001rb II Problem

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a 1001RB II that started making a noise a couple days ago. It sounded like it was tuning in an AM raidio station. It would come and go. Now it is almost constant. I have tried new cables and all but it wont go away. It is not effected by any knobs or even the volume. It does not get louder when I turn the volume up. The amp still works but I would like to solve this problem before it gets any worse. What should I do to trouble shoot this? Where should I look?

Thanks.

If you're talking about a strange crackling/thumping type noise, send it into GK for repair. I have 2 1001RB-II heads that did this and they finally winked out altogether - had to send them back to the factory. Something's messed up in the preamp. Seems to be a kind of epidemic with some of the 1001RB-II's...

After GK fixed mine, tho, they've been fine since...

Thanks for the reply. What did your problem sound like? This Sounds like trying to tune in a scratchy AM station. I dont get a thump. At least not yet. If I can ask. How much did it cost?

Mine does it too. It is my 3rd amp in line behind my Bassman Pro 300 and Bassman 100 head. I am going to take it to my amp guy.

Well I just switched out the power cord with one from another amp and the noise went away for now. I also tightened up the screws on the plug connection on the back of the amp. Could that have been the problem? Can the power cord be making those noises? It was strange because even when I hit the tuner mute button it was still comming through my speakers. It does not happen all the time and it has not happened since I changed the power cord. I hope that was all I need. I love this amp so I dont want to send it off if I can avoid it.

Tried it in a different house? You could just be picking up interference. A speculation.

One one of my heads, it was a constant, low volume crackling and sometimes sort of thumping sound, as if there were a bad connection somewhere. On the other head, it was similar to that but with a fuzzy distortion in the tone on top of that. Both amps eventually went brain-dead in the preamp, but still worked plugging the bass into the effects-in (clean there, tho).

I think GK had a bad run of amps a few years ago in the RB series, since I hear about other guys having this problem literally all over the place here on TB. And 2 heads right in a row is what I'd call a high failure rate for sure.

Mine were both still under warranty, so GK fixed them for free. One of my heads had an IC replaced in the preamp, the other from what I could gather from the work order they just reran the solder on some of the joints on the circuit board. I don't think they had to replace components on that one.

Like I said, tho, after GK fixed them they've been fine. So I'm still a very satisfied GK owner. But my guess is yours is one of those from this run of bad amps. So I wouldn't waste any time on it - I'd call up GK directly and send it directly to the factory for fixing. They seem to know exactly what to do to fix it..

I had the same problem with a a 1001 and sent it back to GK and they fixed it for free as it was under warranty but had a similar issue with a GK MB112 and when I switched out the power chrd I never had another problem with the amp.

Strange about the power cord. It hasnt happened since I changed it yesterday. I am still worried. I will call GK today and see what they say. I am sure they will want me to send it in. Mine is not under warranty so it will be on my dime. Oh well.

Well the noise went away after I changed the power cord. I just went and turned the amp on and now is sounds fuzzy. When I turned it off it made a loud thumping sound. I am getting mad now. I cant afford not to have this amp for a few weeks.

I don't have yet this problem with my 1001rb ii, just picked up a new, but had some radio station and noise stuff going on with my Mesa M-pulse600 I bought that used, and after I changed the cheap speaker cable for the Planet Waves 5" speakon, all problems was gone! and never came back the radio craziness.
