Help!!! I need help in my search for cheap loud quality tone!!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
Well guys id like to start off in saying that this is my first post here but ive been browing for awhile and this isnt only the bass bass forum on the web but the best forum in general Anyway on to the issue.... im a college student (go ECU pirates arrgh!!!) who has but one bass at college and is trying to join a hardcore/ punk band...if this happens i have a major issue. I own an upright bass a squier classic vibe jaguar(the sexy black pj) and a torn up defretted squier p(what it was my first bass and i didnt want drop 300+ on a fretless). The amp that im going through though is a fender rumble 10....yeah it doesnt sound good nor does it produce volume to do anything. i also play a large range of music on my own. the other problem is that im not buying the amp myself, the holidays are swinging around and i need some guidance on what amps are best btw their arent any music stores close by that have a wide selection and the budget is between 300 and 400. Like i said since im not actually buying it try to aim towards new please

If we could find cheap-loud-quality-tone all in one package, everyone would be using the same amp.

Carvin MB12 or MB15. Surprisingly loud for their size and below $400 (not including tax).

Still probably not loud enough for a punk band.

Shop used for a head/cab combo or save up some cash.

I just picked up a GK Backline 600 and Backine 410 for $300 on Craigslist. While it's not a tone or volume monster it does pretty well at both and is very college budget friendly.

Used - Craigslist - Buy as much power and speakers as you can get. Learn to get a good tone out of whatever you buy.

Do you have transportation for a bigger rig?

I suggest you check out the new Acoustic rigs. Or used Peavey rigs, Couple hundred watts with 2x15 should cover you.

Whatever you buy, keep the volume in check so you won't blow the speakers.

It's easy for guitarists to blast away with 50 watts.

Good luck.

Your best bet is to search used. I've had good luck with Craigslist, but many have not. I've found if you follow your gut, CL can yield really great deals. Above all else, don't take a leap of faith with anything on CL or any other private deal. Unless you are looking at a rare amp that's worth fixing at any price don't buy anything that isn't working properly.

Look at used 70s and 80s peavey stuff. Good tone, cheap price, loud and solid. Stay away from anything with a teal stripe on it. Those weren't reliable.

Also, some of the new Accoustic brand amps are fairly cheap new, but sound great. They're a hair above your price range, but used you could probably swing one.

As mentioned, the GK stuff is pretty solid and cheap as well.

Ask for cash, buy used. GK 700RB and a 2x12 or 4x10 cab.

Cheap? Loud? Sounds good?

Used Peavey gear would be my choice. The old Peavey 2x15 cabs go for really cheap.

Of course, this requires that weight not be much of an issue, as old Peavey gear can often be a bit on the heavy side.
