Help Me Choose My First Cab

So I got an Ampeg PF350 for christmas and yet to buy a cab for it. I need something that will deliver a nice punchy tone with my PF350 and ATK300 combination. The used selection at my guitar center specifies a few in my price range, right now i'm looking at a Carvin BRX210, Fender Rumble 410, and a Yorkville Traynor XC410. Anyone have experience with these? Like I said, I'm looking for a nice growl, I like the way my head sounds through headphones, and I need something good to compliment it.

I am thrilled with my BRX210 and ATK 300 combination! It is so far ahead of its class, it needs to jump a few grades...just a ridiculous value.

+1 Carvin BRX210, those are 4ohm cabs with power rating of 600w. pow!

Awesome, it's selling for $169. I didn't think 210's could get quite that loud haha.

Downunderwonder 01-01-2013 12:52 AM

Not so loud, no. A 600w 2x10 is fantasyland stuff. If your band plays with PA support and civilised volume you can use it. If not then you want to be looking for 8 ohm cabs. Either a pair of 2x10 or 2x12 or a couple of 115's.

Oh, i'm pretty inexperienced with this kind of stuff. I always like to think more watts means more volume but the more I learn about amps the less it seems to be true.

Downunderwonder 01-01-2013 02:07 AM

More watts does mean more volume. Unfortunately the definition of a cabinet's watt consumption capability is not defined in law. Thankfully there is talkbass amps ohms all amps sticky.

I'll read up on that, thanks.

Of your choices, I would definately pick the Yorkville traynor 410

Mtnman 01-01-2013 07:41 AM

I would go with the 4x10 that sounds best to you. You'll get more versatility/volume out of a 4x10 than a 2x10. The Carvin stuff is nice, but there's no substitute for displacement.

RickenBoogie 01-01-2013 08:52 AM

No 210 will be as loud as a 410 in general. So, +1 to going with a good 4x10.

tmdazed 01-01-2013 10:30 AM

the traynor 4x10 is a nice unit, they sound good and are built to last , we have used yorkville monitors for years with no problem . Used a traynor guitar amp back in the 80's, the guy I sold it to still uses it , was a nice little 2x12 tube combo.

Massimo636 01-01-2013 06:16 PM

If you need to play at band practices with it and the band is fairly loud I'd suggest you lean toward the 4x10. The 4ohm 2x10 will leave you stuck if you need more volume.

darius8 01-01-2013 06:38 PM

The BRX210 is 4ohms w/ 600w rms and your Ampeg PF350 is 350w with a 4ohm cab. If you get the 4x10 with 8ohms you'll only be pushing around 180w, unless you get a second 8ohm cab.

The Rumble 410 cab is 4ohms so that would be the 410 I would get instead of the Yorkville.

Downunderwonder 01-01-2013 09:31 PM

The Rumble 410 gets poor reviews. 4x10 in general. Vertically stacked 2x10 are the new 4x10.

I tried the Rumble and didn't hate, a little too middy though. Let's keep in mind though that i'm a 16 year old on a low budget. I won't be buying more than one cab in the forseeable future.

Downunderwonder 01-03-2013 03:16 PM

Btw, the sound you get from headphones may have some cab simulation on it. If not it's going to be extremely hard to duplicate the completeness of the lows you get from the headphones.

CriminalCypress 01-06-2013 05:45 AM

Well the Fender 410 and Carvin 210 are now gone, so unless the Yorkville doesn't sell too by next weekend I might be cabless for a while :hmm:

Have you checked out Avatar bass cabinets yet?

They might have what your looking for in your price range.

I gig with one or two Avatar Neo 210 cabinets.....Love em'!

Their powered with either a Ampeg PF-500 head or a G.K. MB2-500 head.

Use one cabinet for reharsals/small jobs, stack the two as a vertical 410 when more volume and coverage is needed.

Check out your local Craig's list for used bass cabs. Lots of options on the cheap. I find ampeg 8x10s going for 500.00 all the time. I know your looking for something cheaper and more reasonable but its just an example of some of the awesomeness you can find. If your unsure about it. Just ask TB about it or check the reviews section.
