Help Me Decide Please - (2x 1x12s or 2x 1x15s)

Sign in to disble this ad
I am trying to decide between getting
]
2x Lopo 1x15s (come empty but will be getting Eminence Legends)- also have two ports in the rear
1x15 Vinyl Bass Cab

or 2x 1x12 Avatar 112s
Avatar Speakers
- sb112s

Price wise they are about the same.
Weight is about the same.
They are both available in the options i want (white tolex, black hardware, etc.)

I am using a Orange Terror Bass as my amp.

Things I am concerned about:
1. That the Lopo Cabs look great, but might not sound great.
2. Avatar is known for having a great sound.
3. My current Traynor 2x10 1x15 sounds good, but I want modularity for varying gigs, and I think the tone of the traynor can be improved.
4. Am I going to miss having 15s in my rig?
5. I want punch in my rig with not a lot of overhang (but some)

I know that this is all over the place, but I really like the idea of 2x 1x15s both in look and in functionality but I am going to lose a lot of the things I like about 10's (hence why I am considering 12s)

just realizing how awful this post is, but need advice,

-Bird

Speaker size doesn't matter. This coming from my own personal experience. Can't really offer any advice on this, haven't tried either of these solutions.

I have found that I prefer a 2x12 rig over others (1x15, 2x10, 2x15, 4x10) and I would really like to try a 4x12 cab.

Why the 112 avatars? Why not go with the 212, and if needed add a second cab later?

Wait a minute. In order to perform optimally, speaker cabinets must be engineered to match the performance parameters (Thiele-Small) of the speakers. Simply put, the cabinet volume, port cross-sectional area and depth must be matched to the speaker or they will not perform well.

The Avatars are engineered: the cabinet is designed to match the parameters of the speakers that they are using. (At least I THINK they are!)

Buying some empty Lopo cabinets and putting some speakers in them will not get you an engineered cabinet. How do you know the cabinet volume, port area and depth will match up with the speakers you will be using? You might get lucky and they might sound OK. More likely, you will end up with cabs that are boomy on certain frequencies and too quiet on other frequencies.

that was my main concern

i want the 2x 1x12 avatars because two 12's will be enough for me no matter where I play in new orleans, although I wont look as metal as I used to with a 4x10 1x15 stack (hahahaha)

I think two 1x12s will be good, and i can always add a 2x12 from avatar if I feel the need for 4x12s, that way its even more versatile

i hope 12s is what i want

12s are between a 10 and 15.. you get the low-end and the highs.. and the mids.. really, it's a great deal.. I think 2x12s will have more definition... but in the above, the eminence 15s might sound "better" than the Avatar 12s.. it's a tough call, but 12s to my ears have better def.. 15s have deeper low end.. but get Acme, Genz, Epifani, Berg, etc 12s.. and you have thunderous lows..

Go with 12s, as it has been said you can always add to it.

so that still doesnt answer why two single 112 cabs instead of one 212...

For the avatar NEO cabs in the color you want:

2 * 112 = 2 * (359 + 45) = 808

1 * 212 = 489 + 55 = 544

Why are you spending an extra $264 for an extra cab/more weight?

Two OBC115 with your Orange head would be pure Terror.

the two 1x12s for a few reasons

but mainly for versatility/ modularity, and transporting, as the 2x12 is much bigger

Same foot print, 9 inches taller and 17 pounds heavier, on one cab.

If it was me I would get two 212 cabs, or one 412, but I have no issue shleping an 810 cab around.
