Help me pick my new amp......Please

Sign in to disble this ad
I am done with my 82 lb combo.
I am on a budget and several used options locally.
I am undecided on speakers, but I am leaning towards a 112, and 210 Avatar. I am trying to find some Hartke Hydrives.

Head-wise I am thinking of...
1) Peavey Megabass- I played one for ten years. It is a tank, and indistructable. Big appeal is I can bi-amp if I choose.
Do people still bi-amp?

2)Carvin R600 - Like the Peavey, I've owned one and it served me well. Also bi-ampable.

3)GK 700 RB II - Never owned one, Local GC has one. I know a manager there. I can get a good deal.

4)Nemesis Eden ENX260 - This one would be new, it is one of those "micro-heads". Local dealer bought about 70 of these disconinued heads. I can get this cheap.

I'm undecided . Any opinions would be appreciated

I know that you probably won't like my answer, but nonetheless, I have played most of those options and I (personally) didn't care for them but that's merely MY experience.

Here's my thought:

MarkBass CMD121P

I have one and use it extensively. greatest little combo I have EVER used. 29 pounds. I played with a group the other day (2 guitars, Keys w/horns, drummer and me) and it blew their minds how the little fella sounded

I can't recommend it enough.

But as in all things.....YMMV

Best of Luck to you in your decision!

Of those choices I'd go for the GK. Pretty solid stuff and sounds actually good.

For cabs get an 8 ohm 115 and then add a 210 later or another 115. Avatar is a popular choice and should do you well.

Alot of people get away with a single 115, but a single 210 seems to be a bit of a crap shoot.

I've owned and like the mentioned cmd121p. Nice combo for sure, but I really think you need to add another cab to it to get it up to par... plus they are not cheap for those on a budget.

Its better to get older "good stuff" rather than mediocre newer stuff. I'd stay from that micro eden. Not enough volume.

on biamping, if you're running those cabs, there is no need to biamp. Just run them both at full range, since they're full range speakers.

I am leaning heavily towards the GK 700 RB II with the 112 Neo, and 210 Neo.

You guys don't think I need to bi-amp?
I'm soooo out of touch.

Bi-Amping is sooooo twenty years ago. I never cared for it even when it was the "in" thing. It always left a big hole in the mids.
Of the choices you mention, I'd pick the GK. Its not true a bi-amp but it gives you the option to control the horn in a GK cab
from your amp. I hate tweeters so I just ignore it and run the amp from the woofer control.

consider starting with a Markbass head, then get the best sounding cabs you can afford that sound like you like...............
Markbass heads sound great and are a great value IMO.......sure there's lots of stuff out there......but for the buck, something like the LMIII would be tough to trump......

also check out the Bergantino cabs...........not the cheapest, maybe not the most expensive.........within range of most of the high end stuff........but probably the best overall cabs on the market....IME/IMHO

there's great things also being said about the GK Neo...but I have no experience with them.........
main thing is get a good solid head with some headroom, and get a quality, reputable cab, .....some cabs a bit finicky if pushed...whereas, others might eventually fart or float, but keep kickin yr after yr.......
cab..........

main thing is, try everything you can, listen to a bunch of gear, and buy once if you're on a budget...........
better to spend more to start with than buy again and again still looking for the tone......
listen to what others say about quality, but let you own ears be the tone judge........
