I know its super cheap but I need to get an amp and cabinet at this budget. Playing an SX p-bass, rock setting, pretty much the standard. What do you all suggest?

Would a large combo amp meet your needs? Used Peaveys are abundant and dirt cheap everywhere. Perhaps a TKO or TNT 115? Just something to consider, good luck in your search!

Was hoping to go in the head / cab direction with the money.

(As a Fender loyal myself) Have you looked into the new Fender Rumble line? Currently looking Musicians Friend has the Rumble 4x10 cab for $299.99 and the Rumble 150w amp head for $249.99 and both ship free I believe. It would make for a nice new little rig. You can of course like others would say look into used and see what you can find. I see Peavey 4x10's all the time on Craigslist for around $200 and if you look harder perhaps you could find a cheap head. Also check out Guitar Center's online used in store gear, however you may have to pay for items you find to be shipped which depending on where you buy, what you buy, and where you live could be a hefty penny. May be a little hard to be right $500, but keep your eyes open and you never know what deals you may find.

How loud do you need to be? With a good PA and a drummer that doesn't bash you need less than if you've got two marshall stacks and a drummer flailing away with tree trunks so he can hear himself, if you get what I mean.

Buy used gear, and spend more on the spkr than the amp.
