Help with Monitor Speakers EV FM12-3

Sign in to disble this ad
We use a pair of EV FM12-3 monitor speakers for our PA rig. It seems the midrange on one of the monitors is blown. I believe it is a 6 inch. The link is for a spec sheet. If someone with more speaker/cab and TS parameter knowledge than me could advise whether its better to have the speaker reconed or replace with a newer (neo) driver, since the cabs are a beastly 69 lbs each. Thanks!

I have no reservations about throwing any speaker (provided you match the impedance, of course) into a cabinet and letting my ear (or a spectrum analyzer if you have one) judge if it sounds ok or not. (What a concept!!!) If it sounds good keep it, if not try another or go ahead and bite the bullet and spend big bucks on the OEM replacement.

Having said that, there are plenty of people on this forum who will tell you that this is blasphemy and ONLY AN OEM driver should be used as a replacement. You could destroy the speaker, the cabinet, cause global warming, or hurt someone's feelings by using an "improper" speaker. You could even upset the balance of the universe and life as we know it will end.

I doubt that a new OEM is available, these are old cabs. I think it would have to be reconed. I think the woofer is the EVM 12L. I'm not sure if the midrange speaker is a 6 or 8", and the spec sheet doesnt say. May just have to measure it at practice tonight.

I'm more interested if anyone knows if there might be a replacement neo midrange speaker that will work with the TS parameters of this box and the range of the crossover. That stuff is way over my head.

There is no midrange in the FM2 cab, only a twelve inch EVM woofer and a tweeter. The woofer could be replaced with an Eminence Deltalite II 2512, but you need to do both cabs, as the response won't be the same and you don't want to have to EQ them separately.
If you have a FM3, which does have a mid, and it's blown finding a replacement will be tough, as there's no mention of the model used other than 'Theile Vented'. If it's a VMR, which was built on an EVM 10 frame, there is no drop-in replacement, and probably no recone option either.

Its the 3 way, and come to think of it, there is a white surround on the midrange that says VMR. Ill have to look again tonight. So maybe a 10" speaker would drop in?

The VMR has a closed back. A replacement would need that as well, AFAIK no closed back tens exist today, so you'd have to come up with your own method of closing the back in.
