I have no reservations about throwing any speaker (provided you match the impedance, of course) into a cabinet and letting my ear (or a spectrum analyzer if you have one) judge if it sounds ok or not. (What a concept!!!) If it sounds good keep it, if not try another or go ahead and bite the bullet and spend big bucks on the OEM replacement.
Having said that, there are plenty of people on this forum who will tell you that this is blasphemy and ONLY AN OEM driver should be used as a replacement. You could destroy the speaker, the cabinet, cause global warming, or hurt someone's feelings by using an "improper" speaker. You could even upset the balance of the universe and life as we know it will end.
