Help! My Cab is making a weird noise!

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Hartke LH1000 and a Hydrive 4x10 cab. Today when I plugged it in and played, it made this high pitched rattling noise. So I took off the grill, and lightly pressed each speaker and played to isolate it. The noise stops when I press down a specific speaker.

Does this mean I blew a speaker?

Probably. Does it move back and forth farther than the others when you play it? Might get lucky and find out the wires are dangling/rattling against the back of the cone. Look for that when you pull it out and test it with a battery. If it moves with the battery, gently push it with your hand and listen for scraping sounds. Also check the seams where the dustcap is glued on and where the edge of the cone meets the surround, see if any are coming loose.

Do you know if the screws in the speakers should be as tight as possible?

They should be pretty tight so nothing rattles. Too tight would mean you cranked down on them so they actually bent the frame of the speakers. They should also be even (same amount of tightness) all the way around so it isn't putting a warping force on the speakers. Torque them down in a crisscross pattern like the wheel on your car.

Are they loose or what? That could be a cause of the rattle that doesn't involve a blown speaker. Make sure all the hardware is tight, grill, handles, etc. Check all the other speakers while you're in there.

They werent loose really, but they could be tighter too.

The speaker moves with the battery, and doesn't seem to scrape. It does pop when the speaker is fully extended, which I think is normal?
